CAKE question.

So, I recently discovered some CAKE on my computer that I haven't listened to in years now. After listening to Fashion Nugget and Comfort Eagle, I began to try emulating their tone (two different bassists, similar tone).
So, does CAKE use flats?
Because I can't achieve a CAKE tone with my Zoom B2 and Yamaha Gigmaker (with Rotosound round-wounds).

I'm a big Cake fan - especially Gabe Nelson's work. I can nail his tone on a tube amp with my P Bass and some flats with the tone all the way down. Nothing fancy in the way of effects or anything. When I saw them live quite a few years back he was using a P and an SVT stack. I have no idea what strings he used though. Hope this helps.

I too am a huge cake fan. Last i saw, he used a P-Bass, into a GK 800RB into an Ampeg Fridge.

Thanks guys. Yeah, I think flats are the way to go for that Cake tone.
And yeah, Sandmangeck, CAKE retired a bassist after Fashion Nugget (Victor Damiani, I believe), and their current bassist is Gabe Nelson, equally awesome.
Victor got me interested in the group, Gabe made me a fan.

Both guys have some great lines - "short skirt/long jacket" and "daria" are one I always catch myself listening to, besides the bigger hits.

I love both. Listen to Friend is a Four Letter Word! That is the best distorted guitar tone I have ever heard.

Whenever I've seen them live he uses a beat to hell old acoustic and a fender sidekick practice amp, and I'd assume that's what he used for the recordings because the sound is dead on. The guitar tone is mostly centered on upper mid-range frequencies with everything else cut which is what gives it that old radio-like sound.

I was about to make a thread giving props to the Cake bassist (apparently 2 bassists, didn't know that) the bass lines in cake are just so much fun to play and has a nice groove to it, just wanted to post my appreciation for such nice sexy bass lines that i love to play

Cake has some of my favorite tones ever! but they vary quite alot from song to song. I'm pretty sure he used a variety of basses, preamps, and compression magic in the studio (not to mention killer technique).

But it could be P-Bass i suppose...but sounds more like a sweet vintage 75' Jazz to me

Gabe uses a P with an almost cowpoke/70s tele pickguard live. he (and all the cake guys) lives here in the sacramento area and I took lessons with him for a short while. he was playing an older kay with rounds i believe during lessons.

i downloaded the entire discography.. and wow.. i was missing SO much. i am smitten with Cake, and have since been learning a lot of their lines. SO much fun.

I love CAKE's basslines- the bassist situation is confusing but yes I believe Gabe Nelson is with the band again. They came to Milwaukee for New Years but ticket prices were outrageous, but judging by their youtube videos they are a great band live as well. I have like 4 cake cd's and all of it is good, clean, white boy funk.
