I played their version of I will survive not too long ago, complte with trumpet solo.

I really like you turn the screws, guitar man, never their, and the distance the most. Great songwriters, very unique sound and I'm sure they could fit in anywhere.

They also cover an variety of sounds. Sometimes, country .. sometimes straight up clasic sounding rock, sometimes just alterternative.. sometimes just "Cake".. haha

my dad loved them the first time he heard them .. tho he's not a musician .. but he use to listen to Chicago, Beatles and other older bands.

I don't actually own any Cake albums, but I've always dug their sound.

I saw them around 8-9 years ago in Fresno, CA - The "Going the Distance" single had recently been released. They were opening for No Doubt, and nobody in the audience cared to hear what else Cake had to play. They were booed off the stage after 4 songs, if I recall correctly. :scowl:

Thanks for the links to the clips, I remember that the bassist performing live with them on their Comfort Eagle and Pressure Chief was using a beaten up P-bass (as opposed to the tele in the videos).

I'd try and name him, but the turnover rate for musicians seems to be ridiculous in the band, and I've probably missed two or three since I saw them last summer.

Prolonging the Magic is my favorite album by them.

Cake is great. I, too, can listen to their entire discography without feeling the need to skip any tracks. Seen 'em live, and highly recommend you do the same if they swing by you.

What's interesting to me, and I've heard people say it before, is that Cake's overall sound hasn't changed drastically with so many personell changes There is a definite sound and feel that remains with the band as musicians come and go.

I hesitate to comment on McCrea's effect on the above, as one of my earlier influences on bass was either Diamani or Nelson, but I do know that he writes the best lyrics I've ever seen (heard? read?)

P.S. Eh, come to think of it, I guess I sorta consider them one of those bands that has a signature sound but a definite evolution throughout their discography (think Jamiroquai)

My girlfriend had about 3 cake CDs in her car, I listened to all of them.. and 90% of their material sounds the same. I like it, but in small doses. Good bass playing though. I just get sick of, "Alllllright... awwwww no."

A Few months ago someone was telling me about this group and I never really looked into it. But After I saw this thread a little bit ago i was watchin videos of theirs on youtube. I completely loved "I Will Survive" and The Distance , but every song on there is great. I went out and bought Fashion Nugget and now Im gonna get some more of thiers.
