I knew a guy who is very skilled at playing jazz standards by himself on bass. Just jaw-dropping chordal work. Used a 6.

They are very rare, but try to find or even make an 8 String acoustic bass. You could try a Bajo Sexto and kinda use it like a bass. I've toyed around with that idea. Even those are accompaniment instruments.

I've been known to do some busking on my own in my town.
I use upright bass and accompany myself with a hi-hat stand to add the percussive effect.
hand out in the subway station sometimes, or a street corner, dark alley, etc.
I do a lot of jazzy stuff, Ghost Riders in the Sky, Best Things In Life Are Free, Sonny, stuff like that.
It's a lot of fun, but I usually take the bus instead of driving because there is no parking in San Francisco.

After watching this video I would say no...let me explain. Just over 6 thousand views in 10 years, that's not really good at all. The guy is extremely talented but if he was a guitar player I am sure the views would be way higher.
If you want sing around a "campfire" play "campfire" songs, you know, the songs all non-musicians know. Learn how to play an acoustic guitar and you will be pleasantly surprised at the results.

Sure, I was just playing on the question literally. This guy plays his own stuff, far from campfire songs, but still a troubadour.

No but I imagine the Octave strings would really add some sound. I've seen some for sale but they are were in the 2k price range.
I must say that a Bajo Sexto is pretty cool. It's more for Tex Mex type music but it's like a shortscale 12 string bass.
