I only own a 79 Ray and a 79 Sabre. Both maple necks, ash body, two band eq. I never played an EBMM Sabre (produced until '91) or one of the new classics.
So, I would say the Ray is more brighter. But the sabre is rarer and i like the look. But soundwise the Ray with a SVT, yepp!
I have a 82 ray and a 79 sabre, both ash+maple. The tone of the ray IMO is more compressed and focused. Really good for slap and with flats also for R&B. Sabre has more options and I like easpecially is lightly distorted sound with both pick up on....super funky. The neck seems identical dimensionaly but I like more the sabre feel
