can anyone suggest a bass?

Hello all.

I'm new to the bass, and still learning. Currently I own an Ibanez Soundgear SR400. I like the rumble and growl it produces, but I'm looking for something a little less trebly -- something that's known for fatter, deeper and beefier tones more suited to classic rock and jazz. Can anyone makes a suggestion?

Absolutely. Get a Precision and you're covered for all the classic rock and even jazz you want to learn at this stage. There are a lot of P variations out there now, but a basic one with no frills will do ya. You don't even need to spend 1K. See the SX threads, for instance.

If you are really "new" to playing, you could save yourself the $1000 by just soloing the neck pickup on the Ibanez and shaping the sound with that onboard 3band EQ--that'll get you some beefy tones

Seriously, you never mentioned what kind of amp you were playing through, but if it is a little 10-35 watt crackerbox, that trebly sound wont go away. Maybe that's where you should put your money. And anyway, who sez there is only one tone suited to rock or jazz?

Maybe hold off on buying an expensive bass til you have explored the one you have. My two cents.

I started out with an Ibanez SR505, then went to an Ibanez SRX705 because I was also looking for more "growl". Now I'm playing a MIA Jazz Plus and I'm really happy with the sound. It's so much better than the SRX705. The thing is I tried Jazz basses back when I bought the SRX705 and I couldn't hear what was so great about them; now I can. So I think you kinda have to be ready for the better instrument. You can probably find a pretty nice used MIA Jazz for $1000.

Fender P Bass Deluxe. you should still get some growl from that J pickup, but you'll definately get the thump from the P.
