Thanks for all the thoughts guys - I ultimately traded the bass for a Jazz (another Fender) and I am all good now.

While its good that you have "solved" your problem there was much you could've learned from this issue about your instrument and sound. Not that everyone should be forced into fixing a bass with problems, set up issues, finicky weird stuff. BUT, I have learned a lot over the past few months dealing with a finicky bass and there isn't much of a way to learn this stuff other than through personal experience and applying tips that others provide to you.

Did you get anywhere trying to fix the problem yourself? What changes did you make? results?
