Can we not have dating site ads?

Hi,

As of today, I get a dating site ad come up on pretty much every talkbass page I visit. The ad is for 'chinese-lady.com'. I don't mind seeing ads for music gear and stuff like that, but I'd prefer to not be served up pictures of 'asian babes' on every thread I visit. I usually use an adblocker but I'm happy enough to have it turned off for talkbass as long as the ads are ok.

Thanks,

Nick

Meh. I could be wrong but I think computers do all the ad placement. I'm pretty sure that the owners here at TB don't sit around in board meetings looking at offers from Chinese lady web sites.

That being said, I usually get ads based on my recent browsing history. I've been looking for a leather duffle bag for traveling and ads for them keep popping up. I also get lots of ads from Cabelas and other outdoor outfitter web sites, which I frequent. And, of course, bass gear ads.

Soooooooooooo whatcha been lookin' at on them there interwebs, bug guy?

Ha! I'm assuming it latches on to the fact that I have my location listed as Beijing, China, and that I read Hong Kong news sites. Happily married, thanks ;) I read reviews of outdoor gear all the time and it hasn't popped up any of those for me...just lucky I guess.

Yeah I'm just busting your chops. I figured it was something like that.

Carry on.

It appears TalkBass uses Google AdSense which I don't believe gives them much choice over which ads are placed. It usually comes from Google tracking your search history. I do believe there's a way to disable personalized ads though somewhere in Google's settings.

No worries!

Fair enough...I suppose it's going for the lowest common denominator - Search for Chinese news, get Chinese women! Thanks, sleazy-expat-guy-stereotypes...

Clearly I need to spend more time looking at bass gear online if I want to get bass gear ads...it's a hard life.
