Can You Pick Out The P Bass?

OK, it seems every other day there's a P bass thread about it being do all end all bass of all time. I thought it would be fun to see if ya all can pick out the P. I used four basses to compare. If the bass is a two PU bass, front PU is soled. All basses have flats. Signal chain is Bass into Steinberg UR44 interface into Reaper. No EQing, compression or effects of any kind. Straight bass to track.

I will reveal later tonight or tomorrow which bass is which. Here we go, have fun.

I voted, but wouldn't be surprised if they were all the same Jazz bass neck pickup. The only difference being playing position, and a slight tone knob tweak.

Ain't it crazy how "tone is in the fingers", but only a precision can be brought to a studio session?

#3 sounded most like my Precision with TI Flats feels to me when I play it.

Agreed. Aside from what sounded like different volumes, very slight tweaks to the tone knob and slight variances in right hand position,.....for all practical purposes, they all sounded similar enough that it might as well be the same bass in every recording.

Not same bass, four different basses. Right hand position was as close to same, about an inch and a half from neck. Each bass different type/brand PU's. Two wear the same brand strings, and no knob twiddling at all.

The most powerful filter you have on a bass is not the pickup itself, but the location of the pickup. Here we have 4 pickups in the same position, they sound pretty similar. Not really surprising.

Where the pickup itself has the most influence is in the upper mids and highs - the electrical impedance of the pickup., loaded by whatever is on the bass, the cable, and what it's plugged into form a filter that gives you a "note" to the attack (when there is energy up there). Here we're listening to...flats, which takes that difference largely out of the picture. If all the basses had the same rounds, and they were all new, you'd hear a lot more differences from different pickups, assuming they are different (a lot of pickups are wound to about the same impedance).

I didn't like 1. 2,3,4 all sounded good but if you're playing with flats then I'll say 4 is the P. I'm torn between 2 & 4 but will go with 4.
