Double Bass Canadian Dave Young’s Bass?

Does anyone know what Canadian bassist Dave Young uses for a bass? There has been some talk on here about his strings but I cannot find any info on his basses.

I believe the bass on his duet albums is an Old Italian but I don’t believe I have ever seen him use this bass on a gig. Anyone know what other bassist he uses.

Dave Young made 3 excellent piano/bass duo CDs with a host of famous jazz pianists. I have all 3. Name them, from Oscar to Renee and they are all on his CD releases, 2 cuts with each of the keyboardists. Just In Time records or something like that. Bass player heaven for him. Rufus wrote the liner notes for one of the CDs.

On each of the CD covers and liner pics there's a different picture of the bass he played. Someone, maybe Ken Smith, could look at those pics and tell us what that bass is. I remember that on one of the pictures there's a clear shot of the bridge of his bass and a Wilson p/u. Somewhere there's a description of that instrument. If I locate it I will post an answer.

One last thought about the Dave Young piano/bass CDs, Two by Two, or whatever he called them. The recording of the bass was some of the best sound engineering I've ever heard. Don't know how they do that but bass is not easy to get a clear and distinct sound without "boom". Some engineers get it and others totally miss it. Dave Young nailed it on all 3 CDs.

hey Carlo, sorry I missed you when you were in town. I was on a gig. I would give Dave a call and ask him. He's a very approachable guy. I'll see if I can find my old address book from a few years back and I'll email you the info IF I find it. I'm sure the Guild can get it for you as well.

Hi all,

Dave Young occasionally plays a duo gig at a cafe a few blocks from my house. I've been lucky enough to see him twice in the past year at this venue. Both times, he played the same bass, which looked very much like a Pollman busetto bass. I say Pollman because of the fancy carving all around the edge of the top, on the rib linings, and outlining the outside of the pegbox. I thought about asking him last time, as there were only about 18 of us in the place(!), but just decided to sit and listen...

If memory serves me Dave's bass in the 80's was a Luigi Baioni, 19th century Milanese. Dark varnish, massive scroll, sounded great arco or pizz with Spiros. He's had a number of basses since but that one is special. He even traveled with it!

I bought a boxed set that has all three discs plus a fourth of full band stuff. Yes, the bass sound is superb. You feel like you're inside the thing and can hear every nuance.
