My friend is a bassist as well, and he is looking to buy another rig. Right now, he owns a GK1001, GK410SBX, GK115SBX. He's having some difficulty/problems with the head, and has to get it repaired. He would like to buy a "backup" head (GK2001-as his main, and the 1001 as a backup), or a newer rig(Mesa or Ampeg), and use the GK as a backup. He knows that Mesa has a great rep, but he kinda enjoyed an Ampeg fridge this weekend. Not sure if the 'peg is SLM or Loud. The Ampeg he could probably haggle the price down alil bit from $2800(but he's not really "in-love" with it), but he could get the Mesa rig for $1500-$2000(that's if no one buys it before he can save the money). Plus, my argument to him are these points. One, the Mesa would still have the modularity of 2 seperate cabs that he could still fit in his quad cab truck. Whereas the fridge is one 810 cab that he could only put in the bed of his truck. Plus, he could get the Mesa rig for the price of the SVT-CL head. He thinks his plan should be to save for the GK2001 head. I told him to go along with saving, but for the Mesa rig. If someone buys it before him, even with alil heartbreak, he could still afford the head with that money. What do you all think?

Agreed with the above. Don't do 410 + 115. Mesa with two 410's gets my vote.

Oh, I'd buy used. $3000 for an Ampeg rig is ludicrous. I had an SVT-II and 810E that I invested hardly over $1000 into.

Generally, this is true. I think this applies mainly if you're stacking your cabs. There are ways of making the sound more equal with cab placement. -Luke

The 115's on the market usually are also the weakest link in power handling. They will be the first to fart out and provide about the same cone area as a 2x10.

Thanx hellbastard I never knew that. I run 2x15s, 2x 12, or a 4x10. For a big gig I ran a 1x15 and a 4x10 together both 8ohms at 4ohms and the band said it sounded great. But your learn something new everyday. I'll stick with 2x15 I love that big sound even if everybody sez its not "modern enough".

I love the sound of a 215 combination, even better if there's isnt a single tweeter(:spit:) on the cabs:bassist:

why is 15/4-10 so bad?

Unfortunately, my friend is alittle hard-headed when comes to some advice. From what I've learned on TB, I agree with it being a bad combination. But he swears up and down that he likes the 10's, but that the 15" adds a seriously nice low end. And it's not like his tone is anything to rave about, let alone describable(Round, modern, fat, etc.). To me, it sounds like junk. Like a bass played through an 8" crappy combo, but only 700 watts of that sound. Believe me, if I could help him, and inform him, I would. I would love to tell him, but it would be like telling him how much of a B**** his gf is, when he can't(and stubbornly doesn't want to) see it.

None of the above.

If he wants a tight, clean tone:

Genz Benz ShuttleMax 9.2 -> (either) Bergantino AE410 or Genz Benz 410 Uber.

If he wants a tubier, modernish/vintage tone:

Genz Benz Streamliner 900 -> Bergantino NV610 or NV412

P.S. if money is an issue, he can buy the cab 2nd-hand.

A 4-12" NEO cab is a good match to the GK 1001RB head and isn't as unwieldly as you might think. Weight wise, mine is just under 100lbs. but unless you hafta drag it up & down stairs on your back it isn't really a problem, especially if you can get one of your bandmates to help. ;)

I use mine with a 550 Fusion head and it can go as loud as I ever need. Personally I think the 2001RB head is overkill for most venues unless you need to fill an arena!!!
