CAN'T GET A DECENT POP ON D AND G STRINGS!!

Hello all.
I have a nice brand new MIM Fender jazz bass. I've lowered the action, bought a set of bright sounding Ernie Ball strings, and even tightened the pickups so they won't be almost touching the strings. However, I can't for the life of me get a decent pop on the D and G strings. The slap sounds nice on the E and A, but south of the border it sounds like crap. Could it be the truss rod or something I'm overlooking? I've followed my slap instruction books to the letter, but all I get is a plucking sound. HELP...ANYONE!!!!

Thanks

What gauge of strings are you using? Lighter is better for "popping".

I'm a long time Ernie Ball string user and I love them for my style (95% fingerstyle), but they really are not very good strings for slap-and-pop, especially in the medium gauge weight and above.
