Cards aren't just for old people!

It's funny, on the train ride home today I was just thinking about how I used to play a ton of card games as a kid. It's been ages since I played any card game that wasn't just a simple drinking game.

As a child I used to play a game called Casino with my grandmother. She also taught me rummy, go-fish, poker, blackjack, bridge. I used to have a lot of fun.. I kind of wish people still played them as frequently.

Same ones I used to play as well! Poker and blackjack with best friends, bridge with family and school mates. Loads of advantages: cheap, very portable, variety and you can try your own variations on the spot. Exercises the brain, imagination and gives you card sense. Played all of them with my kids too. Personally, I've always preferred card games over video games.

Camping at county fair every year with the 4-H group we would play tons of card games when we weren't chasing girls and cleaning pigs and llamas.

Things would get intense, too. We were playing Egyptian rat screw and things were getting really heated as the pace picked up. So heated that this 8-year old girl up and punched this big guy in the face giving him a bloody nose, then stole his cards while he was in shock from the blow. Oh, and we broke a folding table in half because we were slapping the cards down so hard. Lots of yelling was usually involved.

Man, I miss those days.... Egyptian rat screw, slap jack, spoons, phase 90. All while smelling like a combination of pig crap, goats and sweaty teenager.

Throughout my undergraduate years I probably spent 5-10 hours a week playing pitch, hearts (not too often) or cribbage. Almost everyone I knew loved it and it was a regular facet of dorm afternoons and weekend parties.

Now that I've moved back to my home town, no young person I know is sober enough or possesses the initial attention span, were he sober, to get through a half hand of these simple card games.

My theory is that these damn kids are overstimulated and have all gotten too stupid playing Centrifugal Bumble-Puppy or what-have-you to sit still and focus their attention on a single task. The correlation in my experience shows that one of the few remaining merits of a college education is that it at least forces young people to rally the attention span necessary for a 40 minute card game.

My mom used to like to play cards with me when I was a kid, but I've forgotten how to play most games. I enjoy a game called King's Corner, though, and I also like Crazy Eights. I like card games, but I rarely find any opportunity to play with anyone, so I mainly play solitaire games on my phone, when I'm stuck in waiting rooms with no cellular service. Klondike, Spider, and Freecell are fun.

Edit: The game I like is actually called Kings In The Corner, not King's Corner.
