I dodged the bullet for two years, holed up in the house and saw noone but my wife, got the vax and booster as soon as I could, wearing masks indoors except at home...now I have COVID.
In 2020 gigs ground to a halt in March and I did one outdoor show in August. My gig calendar for 2021 ran only from May to September, about 8 gigs. Saturday was my first gig since last September.
I get to the restaurant where the gig was and I only saw only one bartender masked. The rest of the staff and all the patrons were unmasked. In Massachusetts mandates are town by town and city by city rather than statewide and I forgot to check in advance (although in a restaurant I knew most people would be unmasked). We all performed unmasked, though I masked when we weren't playing and took my breaks outside. I could have stayed masked all night since I don't sing in this band.
Monday night I start feeling a head cold coming on. I hadn't had a head cold since January 2020. The rapid test yesterday was negative, the test this morning was positive. Pretty sure it's Omicron because the symptoms started so quickly. Now my wife and I are both in quarantine and I had to contact my bandmates to start getting tests.
I took precautions for 2 years and then with this one slip of taking off the mask, I got infected despite the vaccinations. If I'm really, really lucky it will be a mild case for both of us and over in a couple of days. Of course, worst case is we'll be dead in a few weeks because we are high risk, 67 years old.
Don't make the same mistake I did, no gig is worth dying for.
