From the title, you can gather that this thread is for all the Ma's and Pa's on the forum. Sorry this might exclude some.

My son graduated from Texas State last week and came out to jam with us the other night. In the eighth grade, he wanted to play trumpet in the jazz band, but the band leader said something like, "I really need a bass player." So, I bought him a 3/4 scale squier, an amp and taught him where the bass clef notes were on the neck. He did the rest. So cool to see him do walking bass lines from reading music notation.

Fast forward many years, he didn't keep up with the bass, but picked it up every so often. At practice the other night, he killed it. I'm like, Dude, when did you learn to play Black Dog?? He's so modest, he just laughed.

Anyway, that's my Proud Papa moment. What's yours??!!

No musicality from our 3 kids. But all 3 chose good fields of study, have good jobs, happy marriages and their own homes. So that's a win.

The closest they got to playing a bass is painting a couple of mine.

My son was classically trained on bass. When he was in high school his band played the Troubadour in LA. I'd been taking him to see shows there since he was about 6 years old. After the gig he said, "I can finally cross that off my bucket list!" I told him, "You're only 18. You don't have a bucket list."

My daughter learned to read music starting 1st grade and medaled in UIL solo singing when she was a Junior. She still sings and plays violin but not seriously. She got into the IO Psych PhD program at Houston so that’s pretty baller. And she earns enough of a stipend that her living expenses are covered so that is a slam dunk.

My son went through several music phases of choir, violin, guitar and never got the bug. He’s a D1 scholarship athlete living his dream in college in NYC. And he earns running money photographing and filming rappers through connections that he made in Austin. Cool stuff.
But here’s the BEST part. The college he attends is where they filmed School of Rock! “Because you’re not hardcore unless you live hardcore”

My 7th grade son just started on trumpet. His school's first concert was last week and they sounded really good.
I commented to him how one of the songs must be hard to play because a certain part is different the second time around. He said "I just look at the music sheet".

Back when my 18 year old daughter was in middle school she played trumpet as well.
She got to do a solo at one of the school's concerts. She played the Jurassic Park theme.

I agree with the OP. Jamming with your Son or Daughter is a simple pleasure that I will never take for granted. My Son and Daughter both took Classical Piano lessons from a young age. I always loved their many, classical Piano recitals...very moving solos! My Son (32) is now a multi-instrumentalist. We have jammed together since he was about 18. He's even taught Pop a few things. We don't get to play as much now that He's married but I cherish the times when we do. I could go on but don't want to bore you all!

I love all these stories about kids carrying on the tradition. Congrats to all you Moms, and Dads.

The artist streak in our family runs more towards the visual than musical. Manly drawing and painting.
Goes back as far as I know with a great uncle, mom, and kinda skipped me though I have dabbled, but is strong with my daughters.

I guess I'm the one who tried breaking into music, though I'm a poser by comparison to 99.999% of the folks here.
Did the teen garage band thing, attempting to play bass in the sixties (hence Old Garage-Bander) and sort of fell into marching and pep bands, and orchestra in H.S.
This was mainly due to a new school that had more band uniforms than band/orchestra students. Marched with a Baritone horn, Pep band duty was cymbals, and held up a DB in orchestra. Poser

I am rebuilding/refinishing my bass, and will pass that and my amp on to my granddaughter to join her dads six stringers when I can no longer attempt to play. If it sticks fine. Maybe you'll see her here someday as GD of OGB? If not, that's OK too. Like her Mom and Aunt were at that age, she is busy with sports (some rather intense) and I'm very proud of her for that.

Next project... a proper amp stand?
PVC? Silver paint? Wheels? aka a Vox style trolly? Would that be heresy?
Or I can see if it fits in the walker I got after having feet (plural) surgery.

i should probably wait until they release the video, but they've decided to drop it on xmas for some reason. i'll probably forget. anyhow, my son's the drummer here. he's 16 and has been playing in bars since he was 8.

they start recording their second album next month, and they're releasing a concert video soon. here's stargazy pie.

Paint... Gold Sparkle on Gold metallic with rattle cans. (The sparkle covers bad fill spots really well.)

Pickups are Dimarzio DP127. They were on the bass when I bought it used. Buggered the Jazz pup trying to do a Moly-magnet mod. Didn't care for it much anyway. Took it out. Filled with a hardwood.
Yes, Gold tuners. Wilkinsons.
And D'Addario tapes.

Original VM Jag control plate. Rattle canned with black appliance paint.
Vol/Tone p-bass config, still a work in progress. The mini switch might get used for...? Open to suggestions. DPDT On/On.

How did I mount a mini switch in a hole intended for standard size pots?

Ha! No worries, sir. Like yours, my daughter follows her mama in the visual arts.

Great stories, so far. I'd like to respond to each one, but won't chew up the bandwidth. lol.

That pipe organ is tremendously cool.
Killing Floor, my son is a psych major as well. He's applying around for grad school. Looks like the window for Houston has closed already. He's more interested in the research side rather than the clinical side.

Keep the kid stories coming.

Wow! Unbelievable instrument. One assumes the gigs will have to come to James, rather than the other way around

BTW James is in very good company at Eastman. Those of us on this forum know and admire the playing of two fabulous alumni of Eastman: Tony Levin and Steve Gadd.

Nothing as exciting as all y'all, but my 8yo who has been struggling with getting up to proper reading level has been making a ton of progress, and was even correcting me tonite when reading bedtime stories (and I tried to skip over some stuff... haha, busted).

Oh and she did so great at her school's christmas singalong learning the songs and being such a ham.
