Cello

Cheap Chinese Cello = Cheap Chinese (upright) Bass = Bass Shaped Object.

Not worth the money. All of these cheap strings from China will need a lot of money in setup/repair before their worth playing, and will still leave you wanting to upgrade soon. Consider renting something nicer locally. Most places allow you to rent-to-buy, so you can bring in the rental after X time and swap it for a higher-end piece, paying the difference.

Problem is I don't know of anywhere around me that rents or even has cellos. I'm not looking for something outstanding, just something to learn on and get going

give Upton Bass in Boston a shout and see if they can't help you. There's some outstanding Chinese cellos for students out there but you definitely need to have some pro guidance.

Since Upton deals in double basses I'll bet they can recommend someone near you that handles cellos, it's a small world with those instruments, esp back East.

Another good resource would be the Internet Cello Society, I check there pretty frequently for info:

Good luck, cello is a great instrument :D

My son's first cello was a CCC, because there were simply no local dealers who carried 1/8 sized instruments. If it's even imaginable, some of the things that can go wrong with a cello are even worse than cheap basses. Two of the reasons are: Friction pegs, and the fact that a cello will always be bowed.

I had to modify the CCC in order to make it stay in tune. I had to re-fit the pegs, and repair the tailpiece. The strings were so poor that they went 1/2 step out of tune when bowed at a moderate volume, which was lovely for a kid trying to develop his intonation. And the bow produced almost no sound.

And the thing smelled like Harbor Freight.

It had a good end pin. :hmm:
