**** Censorship? ...Seriously?

I have to laugh at people actually taking on the Sisyphean task of preventing their children from hearing naughty words.

Yeah, your probably thrilled with Jr Hi pregnancy too.:hmm:

I see nothing wrong with a parents desire to keep kids, kids. Kids growing up too fast is one of the biggest problems in society today. And it starts with narcissistic jerks who think it's "cool" when little Johnny learned a new word. To me it's just another form of child abuse. I've worked in the inner city with kids who are products of this system and the results are not pretty or humorous.:(

Of course you don't. You're 20 and the world, to you, does not extend beyond the end of your own nose.

Only the speaker's reputation. Moreover, who are you to decide what other people's children are to be exposed to?

Kids are human tape recorders when it comes to the spoken word. Why should I have to explain to my daughter's preschool teacher that the reason my little girl dropped the f-bomb in class is because you and your buddies were too drunk/stoned/linguistically challenged to find another word like sublime, majestic, or exceptional in stead of "****ing awesome!"?

Yes, Because I am only 20 I am automatically self centered, stupid and a drunk/stoner. I do not drink, smoke, and I am going into my senior year in college. BTW jumping to conclusions and being a douchebag will damage your reputation as well.

I simply don't understand what sort of damage it does for someone to say/hear profanity.

I think that it is a silly custom to "protect" people from certain words that are "bad"

I ask again, Does hearing profanity cause any damage to developing children? If so please post a link to a source.

I really don't want to turn this into a flame war, I was just wondering why profanity is considered such a bad thing.

So, if you're none of these why so defensive? My "you" was more the editorial "you". Sorry if you misunderstood.

More defensiveness. Methinks the lady may protest too much.

Again, it's because you know nothing of raising children. No one has the silly idea that their kids will never be exposed to vulgar or profane language. However who are you to decided when and where than happens to someone else's children?

At the risk of being pedantic. You do understand that society has certain standards of expected behavior, right? And I thought I made abundantly clear in my first response to you that kids are like tape recorders. And even if the child does not know what an offensive word is, he or she will repeat it without thought.

If so please post a link to a source.

Because calling someone disagrees with you "douchebag" is avoiding a flame war, yes?

You might want to take some time and actually read the thread for the answer to your question.

Because as soon as kids hear the ol' F bomb they start going at it like rabbits?

Pretty easy to hold folks in derision, of whom you know nothing about isn't it? :scowl:

Knowing that they think they can prevent children from hearing certain words is enough. Seriously, it's fine to teach your children that one does not use certain words in polite society but if you think you can stop up their ears you're stressing yourself out to no end.

Some of you twenty-somethings just don't get it. Nobody thinks that a parent can prevent someone from being so crude as to use the F-bomb in the presence of an impressionable young child. That is not the point.

The point is that to permit such an act to bear governmental and judicial imprimatur by allowing this fellow to legally change his name to **** would be irresponsible and inappropriate. Our laws clearly protect free speech, but the time, place and manner of that speech can clearly be regulated to some extent.

And if you have to be linked to a source to understand this, you are nowhere near ready to graduate from college.

As has been mentioned by others in this thread, not one of us thinks we can stop our children from hearing bad words in today's society. As a parent, however, I'm not going to intentionally put my children in a situation where profanity is being used. This goes hand-in-hand with what I allow them to watch on TV. There are things that just are not at all appropriate for young children to be exposed to, becuase they don't yet have the understanding about how to deal with it.

Don't get me wrong about the word ****. I think it's an amazingly versitile word. It can be used for good things, bad things, happy things, anger, and frustration. However, I still don't think it's an appropriate word for a child to be exposed to.

I must not have stated my question clearly enough. I understand that profanity is looked down upon. I was asking WHY our society looks down upon certain words.

again, I am not trying to start a flame war, I have just never understood how a word could be "bad"

sorry for the confusion

I'm all for it, but why leave behind a name like Snaphappy Fishsuit Mokiligon? That's awesome. LOL That's the best name ever.
LOL!

BTW: I didn't mean to call the pope a "homo grandma," it just kind of came out that way. Frankly, I wouldn't mess with the guy, he scares the fudgin' be-jeebers out of me.
Again, LOL. LMAO, actually.

...again, I am not trying to start a flame war, I have just never understood how a word could be "bad"..
Because we make it bad. The same insane reason sex and nudity can't be shown on TV, but violence in the form of blowing people to bits, shooting their faces off, or slicing them up is a-ok.

Go up to a group of Hells Angels and call Them a bunch of F**kin SH*t F**kers. You'll learn quickly how bad those words are.

first off, why did you write two different responses to my post?

Second, I know that some people are offended by these words, that has NOTHING to do with my question. I could probably walk up to that same group of bikers and say "Want a hug?" and still get my ass kicked. I was asking WHY these words are "bad"

First, I was padding my post count.
Second, I think You answered your own question. The reason some words are "bad" is because people put offensive connotations to them.
