One project I play in is a guitar/bass duo, which uses a small PA. The guitar/vocals use a pair of the original [Invalid or Expired Link Removed], which sound great. Today, the guitarist got in a pair of a newer, larger model (looked like 10" + 3-4" square horn) to add to the PA and decided to DI my bass through them (along with the rest of the mix). We used a high pass filter in one channel to keep the bass fundamental out of the original 8" Chameleons.
We were completely astonished at the results. We went back and forth listening to the bass, and the speakers, and there was no easily discernible difference. The only EQ was my preamp; everything else was set flat. I'd been rehearsing through a Mesa/SWR EB rig, and the difference was literally night and day. I've also used an AI rig for rehearsal, and my own gear, and neither of these came close to the new Chameleons either. I've got nothing special on the bass, just a Fishman BP100 and Platinum Pro EQ.
The little boxes are pricey, but they can put out some very decent SPL cleanly and clearly. I could see using a pair as studio monitors.
I'd never heard of them until this project. The guitarist is also a luthier, and that's how he heard about them.
Has anyone else seen or used these? They seem to be aimed primarily at guitarists, but they are capable of quite a bit more.
