changing pj pickups

hello if any could shed some light on this problem i would be greatfull now i have a squier pj bass
iv changed the pickups but what i did was this i did not but the standerd 3 pickups set (2 p bass pickups and 1 jazz pick up) together, instead i used my old mex p bass pickups i had and a american delux jazz pick up i got from my buddy now, i hooked them up but what is happening is the tone is not to noticeable, the volume for the jazz pick up is low when played alone,and when the p bass pickups are on seems ok but close the jazz pickup and they get louder now before i go spend a fourtune to fix this i was told i have to buy the pj pickup all 3 together,,,, does this make a difference and is this true i also tried doing different wireing dident help got worse

Typically, yes, a matched set is better than a non-matched set, but that doesn't mean it won't work.

First, both halves of a P-pickup are generally referred to together as one pickup.

It sounds like you need to raise the J-bridge pickup, and see what it sounds like with both pickups on. Then we can go from there.

I had different pups in mine and the output difference was big. I first added a Bart J but even after raising the J and lowering the P, the output difference was still too big. I added the matching P and it evened out the tone perfectly. Like the other guy said, a non matching set might still work but it's probably a better idea to get a matched set if you can afford it.
