Charging more for left handed models.

This is something I've come to expect from music stores. The sx bass I bought years ago was 250 euro and I saw an Identical righty model for 220 in the same shop.

But for the laugh I was checking out the fodera website. It charges 15% more for a left handed model. I was thinking of doing something crazy in a few years(I was injured at the knee on a broken up path, could be a big claim) and thought I might buy one eventually as a present to myself. But after seeing this I wouldn't even touch them. I'd rather get a custom luther to build one than give money to them. Warwick offers customs in left handed at no extra cost.

Does anyone else think this is unfair that it costs this much more? It doesn't take any more work on their part. I feel this is an exploit, as most other lefty charges don't even come close to this(even if you take into account the change in prices of different basses)

They make less left handed basses, they actually cost more to make.

If they were on a factory line that would be true(due to them making a certain amount of them, then not being able to sell them, thus it costing them more money). But it was custom building I was looking at. It would be a guaranteed sale, using all the same materials and amounts. There's no way it would cost them that much more, if any more.

leftys DO cost more to make. they dont buy as many left handed tuners/pots/bridges/nuts/control covers. not to mention the retooling and reprogramming of the cnc machines.

leftys are losers from start to finish and are punished for it by adding some money on top of the product to cover costs.

It's conversations like this that make me glad my parents and older brother forced me to play right handed when I naturally gravitated toward left handed ;) Well, all you can do is look for someone who won't charge extra for a lefty bass. But even small shops can't just flip their stuff over and make you a lefty. I'm sure they have to have two sets of custom jigs and stuff to do it, and the market just plain isn't there to make it pay for itself like the righty models do. So it affects all builders, not just factories.

Great! Lucky Charms through my nose again! And my iPad. I gotta quit reading while I eat.

Lefties. Not leftys. And calling 13% of the world losers for being born a way they can't change. Is sad. It certainly doesn't cost 15% more. All the stuff you mentioned can be ordered for next to nothing for these companies in bulk. Fodera is the biggest I have seen for a lefty charge. And as I said. Other companies don't charge extra at all. That was a troll comment if I have ever seen one.

they use machines that carve out the bodies. they're programmed for either righty or lefty. it does not cost fodera more to make a lefty.

and when your talking about $10k+, 15% is a lot.

carvin doesent charge any more for lefty..

I naturally picked it up left handed. Righty just felt alien to me. Though I would have preferred if I was right handed for bass.

oh please, if the mod determines it was a troll post they will edit it.

so what your saying is buy the parts in bulk, 25,000 units worth of lefty parts and 25,000 units worth of righty parts to get the same pricing structure and then build 25,000 rightys and 6000 leftys? hmm, what to do with the extra parts?

It still doesn't mean I shouldn't be offended for him calling me a loser for the way I was born. And as If I am being unreasonable or stupid for thinking a certain way. And about the parts. Maybe keep them until they need to build more?

Edit: And you being a lefty. I think would not look down on me as if I'm being dumb. It is perfectly acceptable to think it is unfair for them to charge this much more.

Ian, I think you're being teased a bit. We lefties have all been through this feeling you have.

I wish no companies had a lefty upcharge, but I don't begrudge some for having them.

I do think Fodera charging 15% on top of the prices they already have is way too much though.

Just support companies and builders who don't upcharge for lefty. There are lots out there.

Yes I'm aware of the teasing, I couldn't give a :P about that though. I wanted to see if anyone else thought it was a bit unfair. But obviously they decided to turn it into a troll off. Thanks anyway for the people who gave general feedback without the need to insult or poke fun. But too many people jump on the troll wagon these days. Maybe it's just something to expect now ;P
