I have a question for fellow jazz heads, I wanted to get a few recordings of Mingus and want to know what some of your favorite titles are. Thanks. :help:
  2. "Ah Um"
    "Great Concert"
    "Pithecanthropus Erectus"
"Thirteen Pictures: The Charles Mingus Anthology"

    to name but four…

Two of my earliest Jazz records were-
    Live At Carnegie Hall (2 tunes, "Perdido" & "C-Jam Blues"...basically, a blowfest)
    Changes 2

Later I added Changes 1 (I would recommend both; in fact, I just did pick up a Mingus in-concert DVD with the band from that era).

    More to seek out-
    Mingus At Antibes
Money Jungle (w/ Max Roach & Duke)
Black Saint & The Sinner Lady

+1 to all above, especially Ah Um and Money Jungle.

    To the list I'll add:

    Blues and Roots
    The Clown
  5. "Mingus,Mingus,Mingus,Mingus,Mingus","The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady" and "Ah Um" are my favorites.

:bassist: Charles Mingus is the reason that I started listening to jazz :bassist:

Both Mingus Ah Um and Black Saint and the Sinner lady are great collections of music, but I would suggest you check out Cumbia and Jazz fusion. My bass teacher let me listen to a couple of weeks ago and I was simply floored by it. If you haven't checked it out, you really need to. Also, check out some of his piano stuff ( I think he recorded a solo piano cd or two, yes?) It's nothing compared to his bass stuff, but from the few songs I've heard, it's worth a listen or two.

I've got a few discs... I think the late 50s through mid 60s is the stuff I like best....

"Mingus at Antibes" gets the most play for me
