If those had a passive tone control, too, I'd own one. One of the nicer necks I've tried, and a looker.

Not sure why that's such a dealbreaker around here. I never run any of my active basses in passive mode. The only time I would ever use passive mode is if the battery died during a gig. Anyway, at this price point not a big deal to upgrade the preamp to one that offers a passive tone control option. Totally agree about the neck, probably one of the best I've played and I have a '61 Jazz!

Reordered from Adorama and told them they need to package it better. They had the Charvel box inside a much bigger box with no filler material so the inner box was moving around way too much inside, plus they had the bass packaged upside down which didn't help.

Possibly self-defeating, but my feeling is that if I'm going to have a P-bass-shaped-object it needs to be good at being a P-bass, and to me that means full tonal control in passive mode with active mode being the bonus, added feature. The new Ultras do this, I think.

Replacement arrived undamaged. This time Adomara put the Charvel box inside a smaller box so it wasn't moving around inside like before. Got lucky as this one is about 6 ounces lighter. Great neck, really punchy tone, solid all around. This doesn't have the grounding noise that some of these apparently have. Probably the only mod other than Straplocks are to install a set of Hipshot Ultralites with a Bass Extender.

This is a great deal, and I would order if I had even a little to spare, but alas, I do not-in addition to having so many basses already I really love.To my taste, I would only switch the E tuning machine for an Extender, and leave the DiMarzio pickups alone.

Also wish this model had a passive tone control, but in my case, I have plenty of passive basses with tone, so it's not a big loss *for someone that rarely uses the tone control* anyway. I can see it being a problem for some, and wished it was standard in this Charvel.

(My active/passive Jackson Spectra also does not have a passive tone control, and despite enjoying playing it more passive-really-I do not miss it much. Would honestly change that if it would be a simple thing to do, but I do not want to mess more with it than I already have.)

Hope you all enjoy your affordable Charvels!

I finally got mine. No issues with packaging. No damage, thank goodness. But... this is my second new MIM guitar/bass from Fender in the last couple of years and they both have terrible fret end issues. Like razor blades. I'm going to get it set up for Drop C so I'll add smoothing the fret ends to the list. Other than that, it is great bass and a practical steal for $500. FWIW, it sounds fine to me in passive mode but I usually have the tone knob cranked to 10 anyway.
