CHEAP essex SX Fretless P!?

What do you guys think? It's the "62" fretless P. Anyone have it? I'm not crazy about the LPB, but for under $120 shipped, it's gotta be a deal, right!? Anyone know where I could get brown tort pickguard that fits for it?

It'd be my first fretless and I'm real serious about buying, so any info would be very helpful about the SX fretless P bass...

I've read limited but good reviews. It'll certainly be worth the money at the very worst.

I was looking at the 62 Jazzes really nice looking, especially with the hardware - just a little too much for me to spend on something I'm not sure if I'm good at or not...plus i love the P bass fretless tone

I have heard it before, how ironic is a fretless Precision bass.

But I still want one! Im going to look into it.

Rondo basses are great for the price (I have 2). They are always getting new colors in stock, so if you don't like the blue, hold out for a color you do like.

ps Fretless P's sound GREAT! It is a slightly different sound from the fretless J-as-in-Jaco sound we all know so well.

ps If you ask nicely when you place the order, Rondo sometimes has spare tort pickguards at a very reasonable price. I've been told standard Fender pickguards don't quite fit, but can be made to with a dremmel.

Thanks for the tip! I've been lookin around the threads on a pickguard - I'll ask if Rondo has one I can purchase with the order, but i'll probably just try to score a cheap tort PG from ebay since I already have a dremel. It'd be a fun project anyways. But you gotta admit, with LPB, brown tort is the way to go

I have not had much time to work on the bass for a few weeks now. I'm pretty much settled on a Fender 62 original pickup as a replacement. The stock pickup is playable, but I want something with a bit different character.

Since those pictures were taken, the nut was replaced, and the fretboard has had 6 coats of tung oil applied. In the first picture, the one of the board, I had radiused sanded the fretboard to level it.
