I had a 20 year old set of Thomastik-Infeld JF344s on my fretless ABG, but removing the strings for maintenance, one finally broke at the tuning peg. No matter, I thought, I'll try that cheap set of random brand I got to see if they are any good. Price was about £12. Well, they are the least flat flats I've had, with lumpy and inconsistent windings, although they sound terrible. However, winding them on, the main body of the string needes to go onto the tuning post, much as with the TIs. However, in this case, the string snapped! Poor quality. There was just enough length left to bring the string up to tension.
