cheap pickguards, pickup covers, etc.

Dependant on what Brand or model of P bass You have, the net is full of excellent online stores where You can score a deal on a quality pickguard. IME-some P bass pickguards are different. The differences are subtle, but can affect the overall fitment big time.

I'd advise to try to find one that fits the model that You have, as it would suck for You to buy one that doesn't fit properly. Also shoe-horning one on that doesn't fit propper, would be a lot of extra work to end up with not so great results.

Just curious, what make or model of P bass do You have? I am sure someone around here has replaced the pickguard on the same bass at one point or another, and can help point You at one that'll work for a great price.

does "quality" of a pickguard have an affect on the instrument itself? I've ordered a white pearl j bass pickguard from guitarpartsusa through ebay. I didn't really worry about the quality of it before buying, but now I'm wondering... How can a poor quality pickguard adversely affect the bass or tone?

No effect on tone. It's just plastic screwed to the front of the bass:P

It can make your bass look cheap if it doesn't fit right, though.

Just thought I'd chime in with a very recent experience here. I bought a brown tortoise shell pickguard from "the stratosphere" store on Ebay on Sunday. It arrived today (fast shipping), but does not fit properly. The screw holes don't line up with the original pickguard, nor does the overall shape. When the pickguard is placed on the guitar over the pickup there is a gap between the front control plate and the pickguard...no bueno.

I paid about $31 for the pickguard + shipping. Should have spent the additional $10 and just bought a Fender peice. I've sent an email to the retailer in hopes of getting a new one sent, or atleast getting a refund. We'll see what happens!

Hijack.

Is there a difference between the fit on an american and a MIm p? Some places have them listed differently and others indicate they should fit both

Screw hole locations & sometimes slight misalignment of the pickup routes. Using a US pickguard on a MIM is as easy as mounting the pickups to the body AFTER you have the guard on to determine proper spacing.

SIDENOTE: Can anyone comment on the Dragonfire pickup quality?
