cheap rig question

So I am upgrading from my 100 watt combo and moving up. I have $300 and as of now two options. From talkbass there is a peavey musician head 210 watts into 4 ohms 300 into 2 and there is a hartke xl series 4x10. Or on craigslist there is a crate bx200 and a crate 2x15 also for 300. I tried to get the guy with the crate to 250 but he really wants 300. Im going to test the crate this weekend so.... Which one will be more reliable?better value? better tone? Obviously the 4x10 will be slightly easier to transport but thats not a huge issue. Thanks for all replies.

I'ma try to make it short and sweet. I went from my combo amp to a cheap big half stack that had some power. (my backline gk stuff) and liked it forawhile.. I didn;t know better then. I've comed to learn, the one thing! you don't skimp on is this amp and speaker. I've since bene trying to sell the gk stuff and have aquired high end amps and whatnot that i wont need to upgrade again.

my advice: if you don't need it, as in you don't have and gigs really soon, hold out, save up and buy a quality amp. Cheap rig will cost you way more in the long run.

Yep. Save money and purchase quality used gear (GK RB series, Ampeg and so on.) --Kent

I'll echo the above posts. It's difficult when all you've got is a small combo, and you want something bigger/better, but skimping out on your amp will only cost more in the long run. Hold off 'tll you have enough $$ for a quality set up, you'll be much happier in the end.

Im also currently using a trace. I dont want to get anything with crap tone. I love my trace tone and would like to keep it i just want it to be louder. Trace heads are so expensive. Would you need to get a trace head and a trace cab to get that trace tone or would just getting the head be enough?

if you NEED something bigger/ louder, old peavey is the way to go. will last FOREVER, have good tone(IMHO) and are cheap. And you can find them almost anywhere, and how many amps from the late 70's through the 80's do you see on the used market compared to peavey stuff?? their is a reason its like that. I myself if I could by my first real amp over again I would, old peavey mark III 1x15 combo that kept up with 5150 halfstacks and never skipped a beat.

+1
Peavey may not be considered the most refined tone, but I've never heard it mess up the tone of a decent bass either.

Cheap rigs aint good
Good rigs aint cheap

The word cheap and rig should not be in the same sentence... ever. You'll waste your money. I did.

Wow, that's deep.

You wasted your money most likely because you were uninformed, which is what the OP is trying not to be.

Decent used Peaveys are always going to be out there, and every once and a while used Genz Benz Neo paks come up in the classifieds here "cheap", and they're much better than good.

I suggest you wait a little longer and save up maybe $500.
I also suggest you get a small cab, like a 115 or a 210 and a nicer head. You can change the cab later, or ad another small cab. You can find a nice 115, or 112 for ~$200(classifieds LDS 112 for 200+ shipping :) ) and the other $300 or so can go towards a decent head. An GK 800 RB(very nice head) is up in the classifieds for $325 shipped. They come around cheaper sometimes.

Best of luck.
