Double Bass Check out this cool Golia!

Built for Rodney Whitaker
by Luciano Golia in 2016/17.
Supposedly a prototype for what was going to be Rodney’s signature model, unfortunately that never came to fruition.

Got any recordings or videos of this bass being played? I would love to hear it.
How did you come by it?
Do you know what the wood is?
Also what are the current tuning pegs?

I've been lusting after some of the Golia basses with slopping shoulders because they look/sound beautiful and so easy to play.

Sweet looking bass! Looks like it got a lot of action in just 5+ years.

The pics of the back look like it almost comes to a "point" at the seam between the 2 plates. Almost a "keel", as opposed to a gradual curve across the entire back. Is this the case, or is what I see just an artifact of the photos/angle?

here is a video of the bass from a few months ago!

Not sure about the woods, I’ve been told the back and sides are either “willow or poplar”.
I bought the bass off of Rodney after he and Golia decided to part ways.
Current tuners are just some low end machines, tons of horrid backlash but the keep the bass in tune.

yes she has been my work horse for the last two years, Rodney played it a ton before then as well. This last month I really feel like the sound is finally maturing, the bass seems to feel looser and is projection more than I feel it did before.
As for the back, it is carved but the “roundness is quite exaggerated, almost making it to a point like you said

Sounds great. Thanks for sharing & great playing.
What's the scale length? Does it seem to prefer high or low tension strings? How's the E string? Is the instrument pretty even across the registers? (Sorry for the 20 questions but I've been thinking about his instruments a lot.)

no problem at all I’ll answer any questions I can. I would say that the A string is for sure the strongest, but the bass is even all the way around. Just those A string notes hit like a canon.
As for the E string, it’s strong but not as strong as the A. But these past few weeks, as I was saying before, the bass seems to be settling into its sound… the E string is what I’ve noticed the most change in. If I have time tomorrow I’ll record a couple demo recordings in my apartment.
The bass has pretty much always had light gauge spiros or light gauge evah pirazzis. The lower string tension makes the bass feel loose and boomy, easy to play but loud as hell. I had an oliv d and g on for a while, what a beautiful sound. Unfortunately the strings were second hand and the winding started sliding over the core:(.
after my semester ends I am planing to try out the new Aquila gold springs (Kaplan golden spiral replicas) with their series 22 e and a strings. I wanna get that old school bop sound and I think this bass would pair very nicely with that set

Check out the taper from the lower bout to the upper bout! No kink in the back of the upper bout necessary. The shape of this bass is like an extremely exaggerated violin, but with the way he designed the dimensions it is one of the most playable basses ive ever put my hands on, not just saying that
