Chi Cheng(Deftones)

Not sure if there is a thread out there about him already but in case any Deftones fans or bassist fans in general out there don't know Chi Cheng of the Deftones was in a car crash back in November and is still in a coma. I heard this last week on G4 tv on their ticker because it said the band was gonna tour and record without him.

Bummer I like the Deftones alot. Chino is annoying but their music is cool. Sad to hear he hasn't woken up.

Saw this awhile ago, sad stuff Chi is a great bass player. On a bad note if you don't wake up within the first month of going into a coma it makes it unlikely you will wake up

I hope he recorded/wrote some of the stuff for the new album...The Deftones wouldn't be the same band without that Rhythm section.

From the way it sounds they are going into the studio with someone else on bass. Huge bummer because I was hoping after their "Saturday Night Wrist" album that was pretty terrible they would be back with some good music but now like all bands that lose a member they will never sound the same.

This still has me really bummed out. He is a great person and a very talented bassist, I actually feel kinda robbed that Deftones are gonna go ahead without him. I mean I know you gotta make money, but give it some time..

I had no idea he had been in an accident and has been in a coma. He is a great bass player and hope he can recover.

I was unaware of this. It's a shame. I have always been a mediocre Deftones fan at best, but Chi is great I think. I'd say he is more talented than is required for that type of music and some of my first cover's in a band were Deftones songs. Far a guy starting out they were great lines, not terribly technical, but little nuances that had to be picked up to get the lines just right. Hope he makes his way back to the band and has a full recovery.

Well one time Chi had to step away for a short amount of time but he would only let a certain person step in for him. Anyone who knows chi knows he likes to keep moving and keep playing etc... So Deftones felt it was time to get back to work and have asked that certain guy to step in again since they already had Chis blessing once before. Deftones what up?

Imagine waking up and finding out your band have recorded and toured a whole album while you were asleep! Hopefully he weill wake up soon.

The new bassist is the same guy that replaced Chi before. The band has to go on, I know I would want my band to.

I actually talked to Steph about Chi. He informed me that Chi lost both his brothers last year and he was coming home from the service of one of them when he got into the accident. Chi's brother Ming (who is still alive) used to book my band so I had a little connection I guess. His family has had a very rough go at it through 2008.

Yeah, mega bummer. He's always been one of my favorite bassists.

On the other hand, I'm sure Chi wouldn't want the rest of the guys to sit around. I'm sure they wouldn't have kept going if they thought Chi was going to object.

hello everyone,

my name is gina blackmore. i put up a site: www.OneLoveForChi.com for chi cheng's mother jeanne so we could start helping raise funds for him online. chi's brother ming has started helping me promoting it on myspace.. and jeanne called me last night and gave me the go ahead to start promoting it online.. i just wanted to ask everyone to please post one of the banners available on www.OneLoveForChi.com on your myspace page..or on here and maybe post a bulletin or blog on myspace/facebook etc.. to help in getting the word out and start promoting it in any way you can.

see... chi's insurance has ran out but the bills keep coming in. chi is making progress but needs as much therapy as he can get - and that costs money. the bills this family is facing are astronomical to say the least. this is our chance to show chi our support and give back to someone who has given us so much via music. by the way... he said 'mom' a couple times the other day.

any way you can help is very much appreciated. there is also a family blog that chi's brother ming will be updating. he has already made one post (great read). i will also be adding an update directly from chi's mother within the next day or two... and will continue to update that blog with news on chi and his recovery.

let's all unite and show this sweet family how much we care about our brother chi.
