Fair enough, and you may be more correct than me, and I haven't had the luxury to hear many Quenoil in one place at the same time, but the described tone is the tone that I personally associate with that shape. I'm not discounting your experience which is greater than mine, but to me Rabbath tone=Quenoil to me, and the described tone sounds Rabbath-y to me.

I'm not sure what you mean by 'Rabbath-y'. I happen to have a Quenoil shaped Chinese bass in my shop which has a very dark tone, strung with Spirocores, and I also have a much larger bass by the same maker which has big shoulders. Even with darker strings it has a brighter tone. In my opinion, you have to play the bass to judge its tone.

I spent several hours over a few visits talking withPete and trying out different basses before finally purchasing my first carved bass, made in Hungary by Akos Balaz. I know Pete carries Shens as well as other basses, including the ones he makes himself.

+1 for Pete. He's usually got a good selection. Although I have not done biz with him he seemed to be a fair guy, and was honest about the bass I took in to him to take a look at (also a CCB).

I heard 4 Quenoil shaped basses, 2 originals and 2 Labories at Francois' studio in Paris.
