ok, so this thread is over 4 years old, but i can answer the OP! i'm currently messing around w/ Chorda G & D (regular, not Carlos H) and Evah Pirazzi Weich A & E. it's a great combination, so far. I've been into guts (especially the G & D) off and on for the last 5 or 6 years, though i've only tried La Bella and Chordas for any length of time.
more on point, i've tried the Chorda G & D w/ various lower strings, including some new-old-stock Fisoma round-wrapped guts, spirocores, Pirastro Chorda (regulars), and now Evah weichs. prior to putting the Chordas back on top i had all 4 Evah weichs on... when i put on the Chorda G & D, the lower pressure on the bass made the Evah A & E seem to loosen up a good bit. so much so that i wonder about trying the regular Evahs. really, the weichs are fine, but i wouldn't mind getting a little thicker sound from the bottom strings, since the Chorda uppers are plenty thick... i could throw back on the old wrapped gut Fisomas, or maybe track down some Chorda Carlos A & E (the regular E being too thick!) but then i'd lose the convenience of stable, worry-free lower strings which already sound good w/ my gut uppers and bow well too.
whew! sorry so long winded, but for bluegrass, this is a good set up. i've always felt that the regular Chorda D is too thick and doesn't sound as good as the G, but the more i play it the better it sounds (and i've been using it off and on for years now, it's well stretched out and settled in), and i can see how someone might really want that quick decay, thick pillowy sound, and might think the G (which is meaty, not skinny!) should be thicker and thumpier. if you want that super old school sound, maybe the D is right on track!
so, yeah, Chorda + Evah is good. weich is fine, would like to try regular Evahs too...
