How does the wood "smack off" the fretboard? Don't you mean "the strings"?

I've seen that one as well. As I recall, Patrick Moraz was on keyboards, so I think it was a rehearsal session for the Relayer album - they certainly were rehearsing a track from Relayer. They were in Montreux, Switzerland, if memory serves.
If it's the same "white Jazz bass rehearsing in Montreaux recording studio" video(s) I've seen, those are from the 1977 [edit: or is it 1976?] Going For The One sessions, and feature Rick Wakeman on keyboards. I've seen videos for "Parallels", "Wonderous Stories", and the title track ("GFTO") all shot in that same studio.
OTOH, I've seen some live footage of Yes @ QPR circa 1975 where Squire also plays his white Jazz bass, with Patrick Moraz on keys & performing material from the Relayer album.
My ears! Even the missed notes and timing errors are there.
I'm thinking that may have been an overdub (separate track).
It's gotta be an overdub, you can hear the main bass riff chugging away still underneath it...unless he had 3 hands that would be impossible to play simultaneously with that kind of attack.
I have a 70's J-Bass on hand that buzzes a bit, just tried replicating his tone using a GB ShuttleMax in Mix mode...it gets VERY close (I have owned a Rick 4003 Before, there is a grind to the rick that's really difficult to replicate on anything else)
