We are trouble shooting some problems we are having with the PA system in our church. We thought that three of our four speakers were blown but after pulling them down and testing them they are working fine. The system consists of a Behringer x32 board going into a Mackey dx8 digital mixer and then to four QSC hpr-122i active speakers. We were wondering if the dx8 is necessary in the chain and what purpose it serves.

What specifically is going into the DX8 from the X32 - and what specifically is coming out of the DX8? As in what wires are connected to which inputs/outputs on each mixer and where and the speaker connected? I suspect there's a mute engaged somewhere in the chain. Also suspect that one of those mixers is redundant UNLESS you're using the DX8 to control monitor mixes outside of the X32 environment.

The speakers sounded like they had blown drivers, distortion and a scratching sound. One of them had no sound. All the speakers are working fine. I think the Dx8 is being used as a delay for the sub and the mains. Tomorrow we going to hook the mains back up and check the programing of the Dx8. There are what looks like Phoenix connectors connected to the Dx8 and one connected to each QSC.

By daisy chaining the output of one mixer into another you could be overdriving the input of the second unit causing the scratchy sound due to distortion.

Each mixer has a headphone jack. Plug headphones into each mixer and see if you can hear the problem in either one of them. If that doesn't work try and run a temporary long cable to each of the speakers as a test to see if it's the cables.

Cables first. As someone who often does electronics trouble shooting, I will tell you that the simplest solution is usually the best one. You would not believe how many pieces of equipment I have "fixed" with some good contact cleaner in the right place. It's usually NOT the third capacitor from the left on circuit board three.

So check your cables and also their connection points. Clean the connection points with some Deoxit or other good quality contact cleaner.

I have a lot of experience with churches including my own. They tend to go out and get nice new components and then still use 25 year old cables.

Yeah what's the deal with two mixers again?

ok, an up date. The speakers tested out with no problems. They were tested for blown drivers and distortion. We found out that the Dx8 is being used as a delay unit. Our next step is to check if we have a good strong signal going to each speaker.

two fingers, the bass is one I made a few years ago. Spalt maple top, chambered sapele core, five piece neck through, hand wound dual coil pickups, bartolini 3 band preamp.
