Cicada update?

I know that our friends to the south are expecting to be over run by Cicadas this year, wondering if that has started as of yet? Up here in the great white north, I heard my first one of the year.

I'm in Austin and I can hear them over my TV in the house. But I grew up in the south, and I can't tell that they are any more or less loud than usual. I like hearing them. Reminds me how much life there is that I can't even see.

There have been a few outbreaks here in Northern Illinois, mostly in parks and forest preserves, but only sporadic buzzing in residential neighborhoods.

Farther south a few hundred miles, they've been much more dense.

Here in central-ish NC, it's been almost a nonevent, at least in our town and the other places we've been. Over the course of a couple weeks in May, we probably saw a couple dozen cicadas (some alive, some not). No sign of them since.

Oh, yeah. Here in Oklahoma, they're noisier than ever. I was glad to see a couple of ground hornets (aka cicada killers) emerge from our yard recently.

Seconded. Around here, that sound is just called "summer."

We get lotsa them in DFW. No real activity yet but the weather's been rainy & chilly whereas it's usually almost to the 100 mark, we're still in the 80's most days.
