Up for sale, a 2002 Fender Precision Bass '70 vintage reissue in excellent condition and in perfect working order. An uncommon model, this bass features a factory installed Fender American Standard split coil P Bass pickup, along with a few select vintage touches including a block logo on the headstock, properly positioned thumb rest, and black pickguard. One welcome deviation from vintage spec is a thick slab rosewood fretboard (as opposed to a thinner veneer board seen on actual vintage examples). Tonally, this bass delivers the goods, and acoustically the alder body is quite resonant. There's a strong fundamental thump to the tone, currently strung with Chromes. The bass weighs 8lbs 15oz.
Crafted exclusively for the Japanese domestic market, this bass is officially designated model PB70-78US and rarely seen outside its country of origin. The quality construction of Fender Japan's instruments provide stiff competition for Fender's American Vintage line of instruments (arguably in large part why they aren't offered outside Japan), and this P Bass lives up to this reputation.
The maple neck has a comfortable medium C shaped profile with generous shoulder in every register and lightly rolled fretboard edges, measuring .845" deep at the 1st fret and .985" at the 12th. The rosewood fretboard has a vintage-spec 7 1/4" radius, and the original medium jumbo fretwire retains its full factory height, showing light, uniform wear on the crowns of frets 1-5, with even fainter wear extending beneath the A and D strings until fret 7. The bass plays easily in every register with a straight neck and responsive, optimally adjusted truss rod. The nut measures 1 5/8" in width, and on the headstock, the tuners have the correct vintage footprint with large chrome clover-shaped keys that show only light surface patina. At the heel of the neck, the "Crafted in Japan" text and P-prefix serial number are present.
All of the electronics work as they should, with the American Standard pickup wired to the stock Fender Japan wiring harness. There's a light speckling of patina across the chrome-plated hardware, and the Olympic White gloss finish exhibits some faint sporadic darkening of the finish on the bass side of the top, more prominent on the back and on the treble side lower bout edge. Wear is otherwise limited to some concentrated scuffing on the treble side lower bout edge, and just a few additional minor finish scratches and nicks on the body as a whole. The neck profile finish is a smooth ambered gloss.
