Cingular users: what phone are you using?

My piece of crap Motorola Razr died, and I'm afraid I'm going to have to buy a new phone. I'm not entitled to an upgrade for another year, and don't remember if i had insurance on the phone, so I think I'm going to have to pay full price for a new one. If you're with Cingular, which phone are you using, and how do you like it?

Ouch, insurance is CHEAP in situations like this....

...my wife has a RAZR, and it seems to be fine (so far). I've been using a Motorola V551 for the past 2 years, with minimal issues (the first one had a bad habit of just shutting down in the middle of a call, but they replaced it under warranty, and the replacement is just fine).

I come up for a new one in August, and I'm researching the PDA/phones myself, maybe get the Treo 750, that's looking like the top contender.

Gard, which version of the Razr does your wife have? Mine is the first generation they came out with, so it's had a few bugs. What I don't get is that it was working fine until I put it on the charger immediately after finishing a call yesterday. Once I plugged the charger in the inner and outer screens went blank and haven't come back on since. I'll be going by the Cingular store at lunch today to get it checked out.
EmmSee: I've been with Verizon, T-Mobile, Cellular South, and Cingular. Cingular is BY FAR the best down here. Verizon was absolutely horrible. Cingular was the only cell provider in this area that kept things going through Katrina. With family and friends all across the Gulf Coast and Southeast, that's very important this time of year.

After leaving the crappy Verizon after barely having any service for 4 years (takes me that long to get that frustrated), I switched to Cingular and have had no problems in almost a year. Service has been fantastic. They roll-over my minutes which Verizon didn't or doesn't do. I can actually make a call from anywhere in my area. With Verizon, I use to have to sit out on the corner of the street to make a call and even then it was a crap shoot. Verizon told me that cell phones are for open areas and are to be mobile. Pftttt. Cingular apparently has a different philosophy, like letting me use it where I want.

Anyway, to keep it on topic, I use a Samsung SGH-X497 and have had no problems with it. I mainly bought it for the price. I was buying 5 phones for the family. It's a nice phone.

For what it's worth, Consumer Reports' highest rated Cingular phone back in April was the RAZR V3. Their 2nd and 3rd recommendations after that were the Sony Ericsson W600i and then the Motorola V220.

Adron, she has the V3, newest version. Other than the limited number of available ringtones, she loves it (yes, I know we can download new ones).

I agree about the service, I've had Cingular since before they were Cingular (BellSouth Mobility), and never had the first problem with either the service or the quality of customer service. Like you, my father and sister both went through heck with Katrina, and never had any real problems with their Cingular cellphones during that time.

I had Cingular for a bit, I used a Motorola V220. I dropped them eventually and switched to T-Mobile because it was like $15 cheaper per month. For what it's worth, T-Mobile does not get the same coverage that I had with Cingular. But whatever, it's cheaper.

I've had this same phone since last December and it works well. None of that camera and other frivolous stuff to get in the way of making a damn phone call. :) The batteries last a long time too.

To the OP, are you sure your phone wasn't covered by Moto's recall? I think I remember reading somewhere about the first version RAZRs being recalled for some reason.

I've got a nokia 6102. It seems to work fine, but I don't do anything beyond make/receive calls on it. The menus are a bit pokey to come up.

That replaced an LG something-or-other which was quite possibly the worst phone I'd ever used.

I have a Razor from Cingular also. It's definatly the best cell phone I've ever owned. I get service practically everywhere and I've had hardly any dropped call. I've had terrible problems in the past with cingular phones, but no problems with this one.

By the way most cell phone manufacturers(not providers) have a 1year warranty on the phone. This will cover manaufacter defect and not any physical or water damage of course but if the phone just crapped out they should be able to replace or have it serviced. I'll get Motorolla's warranty number from work tommorrow and PM it to you.

deadworks is right about the warranty. i currently work for nextel, and previously sold t-mobile and cingular. the moto warranty covers all their phones for one year for manufacturers deffects. things like water damage adn "abuse" arent covered though. if you are in teh situation where you need to buy a new phone, and want somethign relatively inexpensive but at the same time pretty flashy and fun(also an all around solid phone) i would check out the nokia 6102, my girlfriend went through the same problem recently and picked up the 6102 and loves it. it wont have all the same features as the razr but it will save you a couple hundred bucks.

I checked on the warranty, but my phone broke the evening of the 4th, and my warranty expired a midnight on the 2nd. My brother is loaning me an extra nokia 6102 he had before he bought his Razr. I'll be using that for a while, and see how I like it over the Razr.

Been with Cingular since February, I use a Motorola V557 because of its international capability (which I've been abusing heavily since arriving in England!!) The phone and the service have been flawless--even survived a Yorkshire downpour on Sunday as I stood getting rained on for over 2 hours at a concert. :D

Right now I've got the Sony-Ericsson S710a, but I'm not that happy with it. The menu navigation is insanely slow and I have to power cycle the phone about once a week. I'm looking to get a PDA again so I'll probably get the Treo 650, maily because I'm too impatient to wait for the 700p to come out.
