I replied to a post awhile back, played with this musician and shortly after, he asked me to borrow my amp, then for a friend to borrow my bass, I obviously said no. We had a gig and he mentioned his guitar was broken, I volunteered to help fix it, he said he had no money, I said it would take minutes to fix, to which it did. Dropped the guitar off the next day where he was heading to the bar after practicing. This was annoying because if you couldn’t afford to pay for your guitar to be fixed, why would you have enough to buy beers at a bar? It’s not that I need the money nor did I ask, it’s the principal. His priorities are mixed up.
That said, he later told me that he recently got a bass and that’s when he told me that he can get more gigs now. This is funny because earlier I told him that I recently moved and if he knew of anyone needing a bassist, to let me know. He later asked to borrow my amp again for an upcoming gig that he had; this guy is not even a bassist. While it is true that if you play the root note with some 5th on top, you can get away with much but when guitarists start taking away gigs from us bassist is where it gets me going.
It reminds me when I see ads on CL for bass lessons, 90% (exaggerated percentage) of the bass “teachers” are guitarists. Seriously, I always hear, everyone is looking for a bassist and good bassists are hard to come by. Well, this would be the issue.
Is it just me or do you guys see this in your local towns and cities?
