Classic vibe 60's p bass

yeahh youre gonna want to do a solid set up, setting the intonation and all that jazz, dont worry its not too hard really. just be careful take your time, specially if you try to adjust the truss.
You're the first person I've ever heard describe these as "bright and clanky".
The Chromes are a good start, but you'll need a setup as well to fix the A string rattle.
Whatever amp you're using, set it flat so you get a better idea about what the bass really sounds like....but with Chromes on it,. the bass should sound fat and warm. You can also roll back the tone knob to fatten it up.
Other possibility - if these don't fix it, there may be a pickup issue. Occasionally you'll see a faulty pickup get through the line, and if they're still working, often times they'll have almost no low end. If you have a multi-meter you can quickly test the DCR output....or the tech you have set it up can. The pickups in these are really good, but a ice inexpensive upgrade would be the Duncan SPB1 Vintage P Bass pickups. Just about the closest thing to a pre-CBS pickup sound in its' price range ($65+/-)

Rattle A string? Probably a low cut nut. Slip in a slim piece of toothpick and it should alleviate it temporarily.
Yes, return it. I have the 70s classic and got lucky the first time, but don't hesitate to swap it out for another; the classic series is generally excellent, and you probably got an odd one.

If you want a P Bass get a Japan 62 re-issue on eBay and put the Chromes on it. Done. Voila. Use the extra money to take your best girl to a big steak dinner with candle light and all that stuff.
The Chromes will break in and mellow out. If you're going to play with a pick on a P Bass and you're using flats then remember to play near the neck and roll the tone pretty much all the way off or just about. That's what Carol Kaye says to do and she'd know.

Y'all are saying to return it because of an A string rattle??? That can happen on almost any Fender.
Just to verify if it's the garden variety rattle, when you play the A and make the rattle, with the other hand, touch the string BEHIND the nut. Does the rattle stop??
You may just need to re-wind the string, or at worst, replace the A string and give it an extra wind or two to get a better break over the nut.
Don't return it for that reason. That's a problem/feature on Fenders.

check the position of the saddle and stretch the A at the saddle and nut and then tune.

Are the chromes new? They sound very bright and clanky until they break in. You most likely need a good set up as well.
