clean di or mic

Hi,

I'm running running a bunch of effects to an mxr bass di+ then to my amp. At live shows i only have the di to front of house. I think running more signals to the desk is a good idea, but to keep things simple i can only have 2 channels on the desk at present. I would like advice on whether i should add a clean di before effects with the mxr post effects or add a mic to the cab as i can only have one or the other.(we have our own engineer to work with this setup)

Also di recommendations would be great, i was looking at the ART tube MP if i go for a clean di (is this an unconventional or impractical choice?)

i would add a mic to give it more of a full sound.. di only gets your amp,bass and effects depending on the way you set it up. using a mic on your cab will give you the sound that you hear though your cab obviously

Usually how people do it who run clean/wet signals is a clean, uneffected DI signal from a DI box and then either: 1. "dirty"/wet signal with your FX, etc., from the DI from your amp or 2. dirty/wet signal with your FX from a mic on your cab.

Try both and see what happens!

Depends. Some effects cause the extreme low end to drop off. If this is the case, a DI ahead of the effects would be a good idea. The post effects could then be a DI or a mic on the amp, which ever sounds better.

Mic all the way, you shouldn't even use a direct input. From my experience, and from musicians i've seen, mic with effects is always the best. Direct input will sound way too dry. If you want to experiment with a DI and a mic, good for you, but its best to keep it simple with 1 mic.
