i just really do not see it at all... I am sorry but i have tried multiple times to listen to and enjoy anesthasia and cliff burtons sound but it is just god awful... it sounds like someone who normally plays guitar (poorly) soloing (poorly) on a bass running through a very plastic sounding distortion and a very obnoxious and obtrusive wah pedal. I know i will probably just adding flames the fire here but i really cannot see what the deal with this guy was. (ok granted some of his basslines were ok for the music but his solos were just horrible)

yeah dude, im with you. i heard it on sirius the other and had to pull over. i've heard the song before, but recently there has been a lot of discussion about cliff and that song in particular. so when it popped up on the radio i was paying really close attention (never been a real big metallica fan) and I was just like ***? this has to be live... this can't be what everyone's been raving so hard about? just not my cup of tea I guess. it just sounds like garbage to me.

I liked Cliff alot and liked the older metalica and he was the best part of it, or at least he kept lars and james girlyness in check.

Pretty new to these forums, and already resurrecting a zombie thread.......

First, like many other metal bass players, Cliff is one of the reasons I chose to play the instrument. He was different, and had a ton of energy. I also loved the way Steve Harris would gallop along on his lines.
Was Cliff the best ever?? To me, no. To someone? Of course he was! You see, opinions are like butt holes, we all have them, and we all think ours doesn't stink. Some think anasthasia is no good, some think it's the measurement for all other players. I think it was pretty cool, but I'm a metalhead. Maybe that's why. Or maybe it's because I have an open mind, and can appreciate the smooth deep tone of country song, as well as the distorted sloppiness of Lemmy Kilmister!
Bottom line is, no one really cares about each others opinions when it comes to these things. If one of you had the opinion that Cliff should never have been playing cause he was terrible, I may think you're wrong, but who cares. You're not going to change my mind.
The OP wanted to know how to achieve a certain sound. If we don't know the answer, we don't need to post, and tell the OP that Cliff's work is terrible anyway, so why bother. People need to save their opinions for those who ask.
Now, I would give the OP my thoughts on Cliff's sound, but that was answered like 6 years ago! LOL!
I will add though, did Cliff not use Aria basses? Someone said part of his sound came from his use of a Rick? I don't remember him using those to much. Always remember the Aria Pro II. I could be wrong.
of course this all just my opinion, and no one asked for it, so......I guess this post does not exist!

You want Cliff's sound? Morley is releasing a replica of his fuzz wah in less than a week. Go get it. Now for my two cents... He's been my hero and the reason I started playing bass since I first saw him on the Puppets tour opening for Ozzy when I was 8 years old. I think that he'd say that he appreciates that you love his work, and encourage you to forge your own path, which is what I do. I honor my hero not by emulating his sound and style, but by finding (and using) my own voice, just like he did.

I love MetallicA and most of all bass players I love Cliff Burton. His effects were the best but one question remains... howda hell did he get such a kickass sound!??! Just take for example Anesthesia, that song is only bass and it kicks ass badly.

If someone knows which pedal should i get or which ones, please post, seriously i would be deeply thankful and overjoyed

Believe it or not, Cliff used an Ibanez TS-808 into a Morley Power Fuzz Wah.

I think alot of Cliff's tone had to do with his rig. I think he was playing a Boogie D-180, which has got a pretty killer distortion to it. He may have played through a guitar amp for Anesthesia.

I think tpylons is right, he mainly just used a distortion and a wah, but I think he used a delay and a volume pedal for the intro to Damage, Inc.

I think an ingredient people are forgetting is the Mesa boogie d180 the amp makes a big difference
