Coated or Non-Coated

Do you perfer coated strings or non coated strings? And if so why/why not.

I (slightly) prefer the sound of D'Addario over Elixir coated strings, but I LOVE the way the Elixirs retain their bright edge. I put a set on my main gigging P and I'm blown away that they just keep on twangin' gig after gig. With the price of strings here in Australia it's a HUGE plus.

Coated. I get sweaty hands and if I don't use coated strings they'll be dead in no-time.

i use the DR black beauties at the moment on my jazz and they sounded great out of the box, not too bright like new uncoated roundwounds in my experience. been using them for months and they still arent dead so thats antoher plus

I always try the Elixirs first on any new bass - they are so awesome. The coating keeps them new and keeps down the finger noise.

Coated Elixers get my vote,smooth and I have had a set for a year with daily playing and still sound good.

Another vote for Elixirs. Any un-coated string I use lasts only a couple weeks. I've had a set of Elixirs last me well over a year. I also love the way they feel, and their tone is exactly what I like. I tried a set of Black Beauties, but for some reason they died even faster than normal strings. 1 practice and 1 show and they were REALLY dead. I wonder if I got a bad set or something... it just seemed odd they would go dead that fast. Not to mention they looked awesome on my bass!

I play mostly Ibanez. Which ship with elixirs, never liked the feel, like a theres drool on my strings, and they sound kind of muddy for my taste.

my ibanez btb 5 string came with coated elixirs, and yes, another vote! they do look ****** when the coating wears but damn, they been in action for over a year now and still sounding great! only reason im replacing them next week is cos im going in the studio soon...!

I too tried Elixirs first on Ibanez. Then I tried other brands on other basses... No Comp. Elixirs have a great feel and tone long after the other brands went in the garbage. I just wish they made them in a double ball config so I use them on my Steinberger WITHOUT the string adapter. Oh well.

+1, I hate hate HATE the sound of brand-new strings, but I don't like the feel of ground-wounds, and flats are too thumpy & dead for my taste. Coated strings are perfect for me.

I use Black Beauties on 5 of 6 basses.. 4 fretless, 1 fretted.
I don't have Beauties on the 6th bass, because I don't play it and didn't want to waste a great set of strings.
They last forever (I've worn most of the coating off after 9 months on a set, and they still sounded fine) feel great and make my basses look better to me.
