Cocobolo bass

I built a Bass out of Cocobolo and Oak man is that thing heavy. The other is Pecan.

Pecan as in the tree the nut comes from? There are orchards around here but the trees never seem to get more than maybe 4 or 5 inches in diameter. Even when they die of old age in good conditions. How wide were your boards?

Maybe 6", I run them through the joiner so 3 boards on the top and three on the bottom and joints off set.

Pecan trees grow very large in the south. As big as oaks.

Neighbor had one 16-18 inch in diameter cut down.

I just came off my wallet for an enormous amount of bread to clean up all the ice-storm damage to the huge pecan trees in my front yard.

I'm no fan of natural finishes, and they may be heavy, but they're gorgeous. Nicely done!

nice!. i built my first guitar out of oak 38 years ago because it was all i had. it still weights a ton.

Pecan trees are essentially Hickory trees when it comes to the lumber. They look and work very similar and can be hard to tell apart. As some one else said you can find them fairly decent sized but its not an easy wood to work with and isn't used all that commonly

I can see you never worked with Cocobolo.

Pecan is very common in the south and comes in Hugh sizes that I would call beams easily used as a mantel. But bring your pocket book.
The hardest wood I've found to work is hard Birdseye Maple. Putting a Router to it is like fighting a paint shaker.

Got any larger photos of the cocobolo bass? Im in the wood gathering phase of a "hippie sandwich" with a bookmatched cocobolo top, so im not too worried about the weight (yet). How was it to glue up? I always heard its oily and difficult to glue, but haven't tried it yet. I can believe that a solid cocobolo bass would be heavy as hell.

I don't have any larger pic's now but I took these at 33mp so the will blow up easily. Glue up isn't a problem. I use Titebond Dark and depending on the thickness of the boards you use you can drill large holes on the insides To lighten it. this Bass weighs at lease 20 lb.'s

WOW! I thought I had it bad with a solid ebony neck through and padauk body wings at just about 11 lbs?

Padauk is one of the worse woods I've ever worked with. I've seen less grease on a frypan at Huddle house.
