It might be Playfair encryption (described [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]). Far from unbreakable, but lacking the original keyword used by the author it would take even a skilled expert quite a while to decode it.

...although the two mistakes lead me to believe maybe it -is- a playfair, with just a different 5x5 key table.

I remember I once saw a key where the J was coupled with the other closest letter. Basically, J and K (for example) meant the same letter.
yeah there are no F's present. The E thing is really weird.
Edit: Nevermind there is one F. But I don't think I see any Z, P, or M's present?

If that's the keyphrase, then the grid, assuming Playfair, would be:

Q U V X Z
But I see no M, or Z or P either. And it's not always easy to distinguish C and L from each other. The two E's may be significant, or may be just a quirk of the guy's handwriting.
Found a JavaScript page where you can experiment with various alphabets and grids, according to the rules of classic Playfair (missing letter maps to I): Link Removed. If you have teh skillz you may edit the JS code to allow for other rules.
This thing may of course be some personal variation, but why should the guy have made it that difficult if he wanted it to be decoded at all?
heres the code in type if anyone wants to put it into programs to try to crack it. Im giving it a shot but havent been successful yet. Now im not sure weather the key to this is the phrase, "my nesting was here" or the answer to that phrase. Which in that case could be a town by the name of Naperville.
