I haven't seen any MIMs in recent years that impressed me, though I haven't looked at all that many. Fret sprout, general fret issues and nut issues or finish defects seem to be the norm. Of course, you're not paying for boutique stuff, you're paying about half the cost of an MIA so some compromises are expected.

On the other hand I have two Ultras that are perfect.

I'm sure that those MIMs *sound* fine, but little issues like that would bother me to look at over the years.

Fender keeps doing what it does because people keep buying what they produce. I learned my lesson about Fender basses over 40 years ago and moved on. There are lots of reasonable choices available in the market that are better alternatives to Fender.

IMHO, and with all the respect, that's exactly what You can expect for how much You paid for. For flawless, buy a Custom Shop.

Custom Shop basses are not immune from issues. The neck on mine (2014 Journeyman relic Precision) has a ski jump that makes setting a low action difficult, and construction/playability wise, it's still not as good as the 'lowest' tier Japanese bass I have (a '79 Yamaha BB800), but it sounds decent and is relatively light, so for the time being it stays.

View attachment 7119202I have 4 USA Fender basses, all are good, solid, & well made. I also have a 2008 MIM JB4 that is really, really good, especially the neck! My American Deluxe Dimension was dropped and the body is badly damaged (certainly not Fender’s fault). No longer make that body so if I can’t fix it I’ll have to watch for one on the used market.

Bit the bullet and got out the clamps and glue. My idea was to get it together and not concern myself too much with cosmetics. I just wanted to see if I liked this enough to invest any time and or money. Turns out I do like it quite a lot! Falls somewhere between my Pbass and a Stingray. A little closer to the Stingray. I know they were a departure for Fender but I’m surprised they didn’t stay in production longer as there is a lot to like here. Suppose the availability of good used Stingrays hurt this bass’ viability. One not insignificant drawback with this bass is the unavailability of parts. So much aftermarket stuff for PBs and JBs. Next to nothing for these!
