Common misconceptions in bass....

The last time I saw Rush he had a backline of big, heavy washers and dryers. None of that lighweight neo junk that some people wash their clothes with. :hiding:

Well, it must have been a long time since you've seen him live. Ged no longer uses laundry equipment for his awesome bass sound.

Behold his Henhouse 6-spit cabs:

The common misconception is that you need to grill chicken in order to sound like Geddy Lee. Actually even vegetarians could sound like him just if you put a big grill behind your back.

Nah...grilling is for the birds!

To get the kind of crispy highs, cackling mids, and breast-rattling bottom end, you really need a mint, active jazz bass, played fingerstyle, with an aftermarket high-mass bridge, through a rotisserie-style cab...just that simple

I dunno what everyone's got it IN for Griller's for??? The Grillers should be left in their natch'ral environment- the jungle!! They're an endangered species FGS!!! Use BASS AMPS NOT APES!!!

The best one I saw of that HAS to be Spinal Taps' Majesty of Rock( IIRC) clip where the Guitarist's on the cliff with a WALL & a half of Marshalls, & when the camera pans & we can see the 'wall' is an inch thick & a li'l 10w prac/bedroom amp w/ a mic behind it. CALSSIC!!!! :-)

Hmm, this is gonna get interesting. :ninja:

Okay, I'll play. I think the biggest one is Tone Is All In The Fingers, I Sound The Same No Matter What Gear I Use. WRONG: that's style, not tone. You do not have the same tone when you switch from a Fender P-bass to a Warwick Thumb unless maybe you're using a crappy amp and gobs of distortion.

+1

This attitude is my pet peeve. Some players want to feel superior by sneering at anyone with an interest in gear. Yes, the music is more important than the gear, but even the best musicians care about what equipment they choose to use.

I was going to address the "tone is in the fingers" thing, but it's already been said.

I was reading a BP magazine, the article about studio legends, and they asked M'Shell NDegeocello about her favorite studio gear, and her response was something like "not to sound arrogant, but my hands"

My only thought was, yep, that DOES sound arrogant. The other 20 or 30 studio legends had no problems talking about their favorite basses, or amps, or effects. I guess she is just special.
(nothing against her otherwise, IMHO, yadda, yadda, yadda)
