Is it on Muziker? I searched that bass and found an Ibanez TMB100 for 199 €. That bass seems to get a lot of praise around here, might be worth checking out. But that SX is a good deal as well.

edit: it's only got 2 knobs tho right? won't be able to dial down the J pup if I want that P sound but it does sound good

Actually it has an active preamp with stacked knobs. I didn't realize that.
It's a fretless so that simplifies things. I have read that frets one of the areas often needing some work. All i did was adjust the intonation a bit, otherwise, perfect. I'm stunned that such an instrument can be retailed for about $100. Mine was $115. At some point I will buy another bass (fretted) I will play a bunch, but wouldn't be surprised if I end up with another SX.

and just for the sake of more information here's the deal
I'm saving up for my drivers license/car, hence the small budget for the bass but I'm pretty committed to learn it, I don't think a cheaper bass will throw me off, I will have more money to throw around at the end of the summer but I just can't wait to get one even if it's cheap and has no resell value maybe it's dumb but I'm too eager to wait... I still have my first classical guitar which was like 30€ at the supermarket about 7 years ago, I kind of get attached to new stuff even if it's cheap it's always the start of something
My brother also used to play bass and he moved to England leaving his amp and speaker behind which is perfect for a poor pleb like me, he had a cheap yamaha that got a set up and sounded pretty great, he always told me that a 200€ instrument could sound like a million bucks in the right hands so having a cheap bass was no reason to quit which also motivated me (even tho I was more into guitar at that time) seeing him practice so many hours with a "crappy" bass/amp was inspiring.
I never had lessons or followed daily exercises while playing the guitar, I would just sit in front of the computer and learn random things for fun, nothing too serious but I think it's about time I really learn an instrument and I've always had a secret crush on basses so I'm going for it
edit: self making the set up is out of question, I'm a complete noob and want a proper job at least for the first bass, after that I'm willing to learn how to do it by myself
and about squiers, even a used affinity series which I hear are not worth it at all is about the same price as this SX new or maybe I'm not digging hard enough (?) the sx would be a total of 159€ (around 138 pounds / 170 usd)
anyway I'll keep searching, only get paid at the end of the month either way
Very wise info here! I did exactly that. Found some gems in Squier Standard Series. I am lucky enough to have a friend who is a luthier. IMHO, to a beginner looking for the first bass it will come down to finding a proper luthier to have faith in when you first start out. If you find someone who is willing to show you how they are setting up your guitar, that is a huge resource.
Personally I find the more hands on I am with my bass, the more I tinker, the more I understand the instrument, what feels and sounds good to me.
I strongly agree, you need to be attracted to the bass. When sitting on a stand you should hear it call out to you, asking to be picked up and held. Set up correctly and learning to produce the sound you desire, should make it tough for you to look at the bass and not grab it every time you see it. Or at least feel guilty that you didn't!

Also, resist thinking that buying/modding a bass every year is going to make you a better bass player. Nothing wrong with toys and shiny things, but once you have a decent bass, playing it is what is going to make you better. I bought my primary bass over 30 years ago.
I know, I know... I was never that "if I had this bass / amp I'd be a lot better" guy, although I do like shiny things and it's my birthday once every year
where I live there aren't pawn shops or large communities online selling gear... ebay and most sites have large shipping costs so I couldn't go crazy even if I wanted to.
after the bass I still have to invest in a decent cab, after that I'll focus on the playing and not on the buying
edit: if you guys know a decent cheap bass cab please suggest! (without turning this into a cab thread)
I already have 2 amps I can roll with but I can consider getting a combo if it's worth it.
Nothing to fancy, just the 'home practice' type scenario.
