compression through PA

compressing an entire mix is bad because when the loudest thing gets loud, the rest of the mix drops down in volume (it's called "pumping" or "breathing", and it sounds weird).

For a good example of this sound, try listening to Classic Rock Radio. All the fairly dynamic 70's tracks get crunched to oblivion in their entirety at the broadcast studio. It sounds ridiculous; you can hear the record and/or tape hiss changing volume where normally the volume of the music change, the snare is the only thing that can be heard whenever it's hit, etc.
