Compressor pros and cons

OP, I definitely agree with the comments above, that compression is not a fix for deficiencies in technique. The cure for that is practice focused on whatever is weak! Think of compression as a potential tone enhancement.

I do have some free-for-nothing advice, if you decide to try a pedal compressor for live work. This is all IMHO/IME, of course. I use one in front of my amp, always on--but set for light compression and about 50/50 wet/dry mix. My goal is to retain the dynamics of my touch on the strings, but add some studio polish: keep the slap transients from sounding overly spiky, and add a touch of phat to the fingerstyle.

First, do some homework and learn what compressors do, in general, and how the standard compression parameters (attack, release, ratio, threshold) affect tone.

Choose a compressor that lets you adjust all the standard parameters--avoid the one- or two-knob boxes. Those might get you the sound you like, or might not; they just do what they do, and you can't dial them in to your particular goal. And get one with a wet/dry mix, which allows you to do parallel compression right in the pedal.

Another must-have is a side chain, so that those big ol' low notes on the E or B string don't cause the gain reduction circuit to squash your sound too much.

My personal faves are the Empress Bass Comp and Broughton Omnicomp, with a nod to the Omnicomp--but I'm sure there are others out there. Again, all of this is just IMHO/IME.
 
Pro: You can snag some really nice compression on-the-cheap if you do your homework...includes dedicated pedals, amp-based one knobby-jobbies and multi FX.

Con: You can easily screw-up the sonic footprint with any compressor irrespective of the price-point.

Compression is just a colloquial term we use in place of dynamic processing. It isn't just about making loud parts quieter, it's also used to make quiet parts louder. Hence you see a few of us use it to add sustain instead of controlling peaks.
Compression is a determinate sport. You need to know what you want from it before applying it.

It's a real thing. I've used strong compression for a few years now because I like that sustaining Tony Levin sound. But I recently did a recording at a studio where I didn't have my compressor and the engineer had to remind me to keep my plucking consistent. Apparently I had gotten a little lazy with that. So, it happens. Luckily I had already played bass for about 15 years before ever touching a compressor so it wasn't hard to refocus and tighten things back up. For this reason I wouldn't advise any new player to jump into using a compressor right away. It's my opinion that bass is best learned as if effects don't exist. Then you can add a few later on but never feel like you need them or rely on them.
 
I used to be anti compressors, at least until my signal got to the mixer.
At a few points, I flirted with a Boss CS-3, I liked it but didn’t feel it was vital.
Then, a few years ago, a bass buddy of mine that likes a lot of fuzz and more wild fx (like I do) was raving about the Cali76. My buddy was so right, it just “fattens” my tone and I don’t squash dynamics. Now a compressor is a part of my sound.
 
not a lot of experience here, but I'm one that thinks of it more or less as a magical technique compensation device.

I have a dbx rack compressor that I leave off almost all the time. I have it set so that when I turn it on, it does seem to magically make my playing sound more like a recording, better balanced, get rid of almost imperceptible clanks and things, etc. My viola bass sounds especially better with it on—going from "oh huh, that's a pretty crappy tone" to "ooh wow, that sounds really good actually". Leaving it off most of the time helps me practice. Plus, if I was used to leaving it on, I wouldn't get to feel that juxtaposition of sounding so much better with the push of a button!

For a little while, I had a pigtronix philosopher's tone gold (?, the germanium one), and that was much more like what people are describing: just an effect, not a technique fixer, can be set in a few different ways but none of them really cover up your mistakes.

Pretty much every bass you've ever heard on a recording is compressed. That includes first call A-list session players, who certainly have their technique dialed in. Certainly there are people who use them to try to cover up sloppy playing, but that's of limited use and not what compressors are for. There are also plenty of people who feel that compressors are a crutch and only used to cover up bad technique, and they are also missing the point.

Compression is probably the hardest effect for most players to get right. It take a lot of trial and error, and you kiss a lot of frogs (i.e. buy many compressors) looking for the one you like best that meets your tonal goals.

You can use a compressor as a crutch, but it will sound like compressed sloppy playing, just with more even dynamics. However if used properly, they can slot the bass in the mix very well and make the whole band sound better. I've had a ton of compressors... I love the effect personally as it will smooth out peaks and tends to have a fattening effect. I've settled on the Keeley Bassist personally as my go to. This is after spending thousands on all sorts of boutique compressors :laugh:

I have to chime in about this song.

The bass alternates between providing a driving rhythm and backing off to provide wide open space. The recording is very compressed, which provides a very solid and consistent feel. It is one of several recordings I use to compare against my own compression to determine how well my end result turned out. As for the long sustain - I actually find it to be quite short. When I play the song, I have to use a significant amount of muting to get the sustain knocked down to what is on the recording.

Personally, I think the “compressor is a crutch for poor technique!” argument is a bastardization of what is more common use case of “you don’t always get the luxury of being able to focus on your playing 100% of the time in live situations”.

Whether it be singing backup parts, random things happening in the house or on stage, or simply a matter of you find yourself being buried in the mix so you’re digging in harder: we’re not talking about technique, it’s really more about taming some of the side effects of the realities of live performance. We aren’t robots and that’s why people go to shows rather than just listening to Spotify.

There's no magic compensation for technique. However compression can be helpful if you need more sustain from your bass. I could have used it for my 1965 Jazz back in the early 70's when I was touring, but have no need for it with my '82 Jazz with its all-maple neck. It has great sustain.

Compressors for use in live performance usually have three functions 1.) to add sustain to your sound, 2.) to protect your amp and/or your speakers, and 3.) to use as to produce a specific effect to your sound.

A compressor can help you get more sustain from a bass that just doesn't have enough sustain. It can also be used as an effect. I can max it our or max out the ratio and you will get to a a point where your bass notes start sounding like organ notes with the beginning of the note, the middle of the note, and the end of the note all being at the same level throughout and it will go on as long as you have the note fretted. That's what I call "Elephant Stomp Compression". There is absolutely no loud or soft parts to the note, it's all one level. I would classify that as an "effect" because it is so drastic. About the only song I use a lot of compression on if I have it is Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time" There is very little dynamics in that song and it sounds like the bass is originating from a keyboard - because it is. If I want to imitate that sound, I'll do it with a compressor that is either turned up a lot (single control) or I'll bump the ratio control way up if it has multiple controls.

Good dynamics, IMO, are key to getting a good sound. You want people to hear how you play some parts softly, some loudly, as well as at all levels in between, or at least I do. That's part of the artistry in playing musical instruments. A simple and true fact about compression that you need to understand is compression eats your dynamics. The more compression you use the smaller your dynamic range becomes. It trades off dynamics for sustain. So it's one of those Goldilocks things - not too little, not too much, just enough! If you do it right, you can pretty easily add some sustain to your notes and still have plenty of dynamic range left. I would posit that many times with the optimal settings, it is not apparent to the audience that you are even using compression. everything just sounds good.

Typical controls on a compressor are Threshold, Attack, Ratio, and Decay.

• Threshold - determines at what level the compression should engage and disengage.

Attack - determines how quickly after it meets the threshold to start the compression that the compression actually begins (you may want it fast for slap by slower for other styles).

• Ratio - This dials in how much compression you want. You'll see numbers like 4:1, 8:1, 12:1, etc. Often the ratio control can be set to ratios in between those that are printed on its face. 4:1 means you need to supply 4db more signal energy to get 1db in actual SPL (volume). So you have to strike the string hard enough to raise the SPL by 4db to actually get it to give you a 1db increase. It will convert the excess energy into sustain. 8:1 means you have to initiate an 8db increase in sound to actually raise it 1db, again while converting the rest of the energy into sustain. The higher you turn that ratio dial, the more compression is applied to the note. That also means the more sustain you apply to the note but the less dynamics are available to you. A 10db difference is heard by us humans as twice as loud if it's an increase, or half as loud as it's a decrease. Compressors by their inherent nature. decrease the SPL and increase sustain.

Decay - This one is kind of the opposite of attack. It controls how quickly, after the note energy sinks below the threshold of compression, the note disengages and starts to fade. Again with Slap techniques, you'd want this to be really fast and with other techniques you might not. If you use a too short of a decay setting for songs that you need to hold out some notes, they will come to a very abrupt end once that energy level sinks below the threshold. And that just sounds weird if you are putting an abrupt end to a legato (smooth) section.

Hard Knee/Soft Knee selector. Another control that is often just a switch on a compressor is a Hard Knee/Soft Knee selector. This augments how the attack and decay work. A Hard knee is an abrupt change whereas a Soft Knee is a more gradual change (can still act quickly just not so abrupt. For instance my Eden WT500/800 (800-watts rms) has an auto-compressor that I can engage. When I do that, the gain control becomes the threshold control to let the compressor know when you want it to kick in. The auto-compressor in my Eden WT amp sounds to me like it has a hard knee. It works well for slap but I really don't like the sound of it for anything else (YMMV). It's very abrupt and there is a huge difference between the native sound and the compressed sound.

On the other hand, my newer Eden TN226 (225-watts rms) also has an auto-compressor that has a much softer knee and sounds much more musical to me. I had to use it one night at that small brewpub that we played so often, because we got too loud. I looked at my amp the power clip light was flashing. If it flashes very much, very long, the protection circuits step in and shut it off. Turning down the bass EQ didn't help and turning down the master did, but then I couldn't be heard. So I sighed and turned on the auto compressor, expecting it to sound like the one in my big Eden amp. I turned the gain up slightly so that compressor light flashed a little more (it flashes while it's compressing) and started playing. That clip light went right off and my level and dynamics sounded the same. It was very nice! Evidently it was the just the peaks that were causing the clipping and as I had it set, it just compressed those peaks enough to stop clipping the power amp and yet I couldn't detect the difference in my dynamic range. I was very surprised and very happy.

Compressors can have all of those controls and perhaps more, or they may have a single control that does everything. My WTDI (DI box with Eden WT preamp) has a single control. And I use that to get the sound I want for that one Cyndi Lauper song. My guess is those control the ratio setting and all the other controls function according to an algorithm or circuitry to control the rest of it. I have two controls built into my DNA-800 amp, both the threshold and the ratio. The rest of it (attack, decay, hard knee/soft knee) automatically adjust from there. It is also a very musical compressor in that nothing sounds harsh through it. Some stompboxes will have all 4 and some just turn on and off. Some studio rack compressors with have additional controls.

I'm not sure that a compressor can compensate for poor technique and can solve sustain problems or gear protection problems, but when you fret a note and when you release a note is not going to change because you are using a compressor. If anything, it will challenge you to get as much dynamic difference in a song played with it as without it. My bass has great sustain, so that's not a problem. I have used it however as an effect and also to protect my gear.

You're right of course @red_rhino, but the compression done by the studio is not done for the same reason as live performance compression.

In a live performance, the compression is used for the bass player to get "his or her" sound. In the studio, compression of his bass signal is used to get everything to sound good together and to give everything it's own space. If the sound needs to be fatter at one point with the bass they'll typically run some parallel compression with so much compression in the signal that the peaks are gone entirely and that would sound terrible by itself. But when mixed with the original signal, it reinforces the middle of the sound and makes it sound fatter. And they can adjust the level of that parallel compression to get whatever the wet/dry mix is that sounds the best to them.

They can also use compression to duck the bass signal depending upon the level of the kick drum. Ducking is usually a momentary compression to reduce one signal so another signal sharing the same sonic space at that point can be heard more clearly. Fairly common technique to get the drums (kick drum actually) and the bass to sound good together. There are a lot of tricks done with compression by a sound engineer who really knows what he's doing. Their first effort is to get the good raw "tapes" (tracks now-days) that will give them plenty of room to manipulate and work their magic. Then the EQ and compression magic as well as de-essing and other tricks to massage the tracks to get the best overall sound.

I should have included more detail in my original post; specifically around plucking. Because this is a new style for me, the right-hand technique is pretty average, hence the question of compression being a potential bandaid. It certainly helps even things out, but I love what you explained about your studio session and your view on learning bass as if effects don't exist!
 
A compressor is like orpiment: you can use it to cover up written/painted mistakes, or you can use it to create your new painting. You cannot expect to completely cover up the bad, but you can create new good with it. I, for one, enjoy the valve-like breakup that an 1176 can give me when pushed a bit.

Very thoughtful advice. I've long used compression in the mixing / mastering stages but only just recently have I experimented with compression for live sound. I picked up an old Cali76CB and am doing just what you described. Use the mildest ratio (I believe it's 4:1 on the Cali), light compression, half wet/dry, and definitely use the sidechain. I like that sense of polish. I like it. Not quite as much 3-D depth that the raw Noble preamp helps create. So, I like it without, too. I'm keeping an open mind about possibilities.

One question: what's the best approach to a soundman when describing compression on your pedalboard and what tone you're after? Describe the ratio and settings and "take it from there?" Ask him or her to not mess with your signal? Offer to leave compression off and let them sculpt from scratch? You can't control what leaves your pedalboard so I'm curious how do-it-yourself-compression-lovers are approaching this one.

Aha! Good example of how compression creates a specific effect. This one will be handy for a new project where some of the songs need bass to sound like an upright (with a P-bass and flats) but avoiding the dead thud of using a mute. Thank you!

I like comps in a band setting to control quick burst of aggressive playing to prevent blowing up the board.
When playing at home though at lower volume, I dont want a camp anywhere near my signal chain. If I'm playing at home, im practicing and i want to hear EVERYTHING in it's natural state. Comps at home just "feel" wrong to me. Like they steel possible expression.
