Compressors

I am completely new to compressors and looking to gain some knowledge. I am currently playing a Gibson Thunderbird through an Ampeg SVT-CL with an Ampeg 8x10 Cab. I just want something that will level out everything. I also run a tech 21 though a PA and don't know if that needed information? I guess what is the industry standard and are these things worth the money?

I use an EBS Multicomp as it allows control of both bass and treble frequencies separately. My second choice would be (and was) the Boss.
