So I may be venturing into some live sound (for my own band), and if I do I will probably want to build a PA on a budget. I don't want to say it's a vocal-only PA because I think it'd be a good idea to mic most or all of the instruments and at least run a little of each through the PA to minimize stage volume, but it'll be mostly for the vocals.
The music is plain rock, like Weezer. Nothing super sub-heavy like metal or dubstep, but not an acoustic gig, either.
The mixer is not an issue. I'm looking for powered mains/subs. IEM, so monitors are not an issue.
So the big question is whether I buy two tops as mains as a first step, or whether one top and one sub would be better considering I want to run more than vox through (even minimally).
And, if I go with one top and one sub, can you recommend stage placement?
