Confused about my Fender Musicmaster

I picked up a Fender Musicmaster years ago. From the research I did and also the serial # on the back plate, it seems to be an early 70's model. The serial number is a bit worn, but reads like this: 29?099.

If you do a check on serial numbers, that dates it to 1970, but I thought Musicmasters weren't produced until '71. Not a big deal, but I'm curious to know if I may have one of the first ones produced...

Any insight woould be helpful. Thanks!

Legend has it that Fender had big boxes of neck plates with serial numbers engraved.
When they assembled basses, they just reached in and pulled one out.

So it is not a stretch that your 1971 could have a 1970 serial no.
For that matter, it could even have been assembled in 1972 I guess.
