What’s interesting about that Jazz bass both BB and Jimi are playing, is it’s still owned by Tommy Shannon.
Tommy went on to play with Stevie Ray Vaughan, and played that bass through out his career.

They first jammed in the early 70’s, then Shannon replaced a guy named Jackie Newhouse in Double Trouble circa ‘80/‘81.

So that implies I did not see Tommy with Stevie when he opened for The New Barbarians concert I went to in '79.

Where would that have been? In 1979, as far as I have gathered, he wasn’t playing outside of Texas much, if at all. A few years earlier, he had recorded in LA while in a band with a guy named Marc Benno, who had worked with Leon Russell, but otherwise by the end of the decade he was slogging it out in the Austin blues scene with blues singer Lou Ann Barton.
As for the Barbarians, there was a slight early connection with the Stones, for what it’s worth…there was a British guy, Chesley Millikin, who had been a mid-60’s roadie for Mick and the boys. He had moved to Austin to breed/raise race horses, but eventually wanted to get back in the biz as a manager. After the band with Barton broke up, Millikin took Vaughn on as a frontman/solo act.
Around 1982, I was jamming with a young female guitarist, just out of high school, who mentioned that her family knew this guy down in Texas who managed an incredible lead player doing Hendrix-ish blues. I ultimately lost track of her as she went off to college, but when I heard the Bowie album, then the story about the Montreux Jazz Festival, then finally “Pride And Joy”, I thought, “that’s gotta be the guy”.

Hmm, well anything’s possible, I wonder if there’s online list of SRV gigs throughout his career. But yeah, that would have been Newhouse who you saw. Here’s a video that’s annotated as 1980, with him…
